On the 60th anniversary of its founding, UNCTAD changed its name to… " United Nations Trade and Development"

Geneva, April 9 / WAM / Rebecca Greenspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, known as UNCTAD, which specializes in trade and development issues in developing countries, announced that the name of the organization has been changed to (United Nations Trade and Development).

In a press conference held today in Geneva on the occasion of the organization’s sixtieth anniversary, Greenspan considered that the step confirms the United Nations organization’s commitment to achieving the greatest impact through a new, clearer visual identity by demonstrating its values ​​and supporting its voice at the global level on behalf of developing countries.

She pointed out that changing the name of the organization, which operates in a world witnessing geopolitical tensions, climate change, and the challenges of the repercussions of the Covid epidemic crisis, comes at a time when the organization is strengthening its ability to quickly analyze new challenges and support efforts made in developing countries, describing the change as a pivotal moment as the first ever comprehensive review of the organization’s footprint. At the global level and an affirmation of its readiness to respond to the new complexities of the global economy in order to ensure that development is at the heart of global economic decisions and that it is a heard voice for developing countries.

Greenspan announced that UNCTAD, on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of its founding, will organize next June in Geneva a Global Leaders Forum under the slogan (Charting a new development path in a changing world), with the participation of António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and a number of heads of state and government, in addition to civil society organizations and representatives of the private sector. And some of the world’s leading economists.

The Secretary-General of the Organization said that the forum aims to confirm the integrated approach followed by the Organization in trade and development, including finance, technology, investment and sustainable development, with a special focus on the needs of developing countries and their work in Africa, the least developed countries, small island developing states and landlocked developing countries. She stressed that the forum It will be an important occasion to explore innovative approaches and pioneering solutions with the world’s leading policy makers.
