Minister of Immigration: Egypt seeks to enhance intra-trade between COMESA member states

Minister of State for Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, Ambassador Soha Gendi, affirmed Egypt’s endeavor to enhance intra-trade among COMESA member states and achieve regional economic integration among the group’s countries.

 

She stated The Ministry of Immigration – in a statement, today, Thursday, that upon commission from Ambassador Soha Gendy, the Assistant Minister of Immigration for Communities Affairs, Ambassador Amr Abbas, held a consultative meeting; To review the results of the Ministry’s participation in the workshop to discuss facilitating the granting of business visas among the COMESA group of countries, which was organized last March in Zimbabwe, in the presence of the Assistant Minister of Immigration for Communities and International Bodies Affairs, Salma Sakr, and a number of representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, and the General Authority for Investment, And the concerned national authorities.

 

The Minister indicated – according to the statement – that the Egyptian state places among its priorities the promotion of trade exchange with all African countries, especially after the launch of the African Free Trade Area, so that The COMESA group constitutes the nucleus of African economic integration. Ambassador Amr Abbas confirmed, during his speech, that the first conference of immigration ministers held on August 14, 2023, reviewed the pioneering Egyptian experience in supporting safe immigration and combating illegal immigration, and the efforts of the Ministry of Immigration within the framework of the presidential initiative “Survival Boats.” To reduce illegal immigration and educate young people about its dangers.

 

He noted the model of the Egyptian-German Center for Jobs, Immigration and Reintegration, which is run by the Ministry of Immigration in cooperation with the German Agency for International Cooperation, to provide training and qualification programs. For young people to prepare them for various labor markets, pointing out the praise of the representatives of the International Migration and Labor Organization for the pioneering Egyptian experience in the field of combating illegal immigration. In turn, Assistant Minister of Immigration for Communities and International Bodies Affairs, Salma Saqr, reviewed, during the meeting, the results of her participation, in the regional workshop in the capital, Harare, of the State of Zimbabwe, during the period from 6 to 8 March 2024, on the determinants of the movement of service providers and business representatives and facilitating the procedures for obtaining them. She highlighted that the Egyptian state is keen to enhance cooperation with member states in the areas of intra-trade, in addition to providing facilities to businessmen in order to increase foreign flows to the Egyptian state, pointing to the efforts and vision of the Ministry of Immigration through which work is being done to encourage Egyptian investors abroad to invest in Egypt in implementation of the directives of the Ministry of Immigration. At the end of the meeting, representatives of the various national authorities agreed to study all matters. Concerning the results of the workshop, to reach the formulation of a unified national position that achieves Egyptian interests and supports relations with COMESA, while achieving sustainable development and the goals of the National Agenda 2030.
