Monte-Carlo: Stefanos Tsitsipas wins a long fight against Jannik Sinner and reaches the final

This first semi-final of the Masters 1000 in Monte-Carlo, Saturday April 13, left the suspense hanging. At the end of a particularly close match, which was played in three sets, it was finally Stefanos Tsitsipas who pocketed his ticket for the final (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).

Monte-Carlo is a terrain that the Greek knows well since he won the tournament twice, in 2021 and 2022. The best terrain, therefore, to achieve a return to his best level. Opposed to the world number 2, who is having a thunderous start to the season – he notably won the Australian Open in January and the Masters 1000 in Miami last month – Tsitsipas imposed his rhythm quite quickly, with a break from the third game. He finally won the first set in 44 minutes.

But, as in the final of the Australian Open where he overturned the match in five sets against Daniil Medvedev, the Italian knew how to change pace. He quickly took the lead in this second round, thus giving himself his first break of the match, with a much higher intensity. The world number 12 returned to 5-3 and at one time hoped to restart this second set of almost an hour with five break points, all saved by his opponent.

The third act seemed to start on the same basis: a break from the Italian in the first game, confirmed in the second, to take the lead (3-1). But Jannik Sinner, hampered by leg pain, struggled more and more physically. A double fault from Stefanos Tsitsipas, unreported, prevented the world number 2 from obtaining a double break in this set.

Diminished and annoyed, the Italian could not resist the intensity of Tsitsipas at the end of the set. Jannik Sinner conceded only his second defeat of the season, after that inflicted by Carlos Alcaraz at Indian Wells. As for Stefanos Tsitsipas, he will face the winner of the duel between Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud on Sunday. To hope to win his third Masters 1000 on the Rock.
