The United Nations commemorates the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda

New York, April 13, 2017 – Yesterday evening, the United Nations commemorated the anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda, which occurred 30 years ago, and affirmed its determination not to forget the extermination of more than a million people during about 100 days, starting on April 7, 1994.
In its main hall in New York, the United Nations General Assembly organized a special event on this occasion, attended by the Secretary-General, senior officials of the international organization and delegates of countries, during which candles were lit in memory of the victims and in honor of the survivors and those who tried to prevent the genocide.
In his intervention during the event, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres described the genocide against the Tutsis as a stain on the common conscience of humanity and a brutal reminder of the legacy of colonialism and the consequences of hate speech.
Guterres said that the 100 days in which the genocide occurred reflected the worst of humanity, but the period that followed revealed the best of the human spirit in terms of steadfastness, reconciliation, courage and strength.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations warned that genocide begins with the weapon of words, pointing out that the genocide in Rwanda was fueled by decades of hate speech targeting Tutsis, and stressing that these dangerous and divisive ideologies are presented through social media, which he described as “an amplifier for Global scope.
