A statement issued by the Airports Council International stated that Dubai International Airport succeeded for the first time in reaching second place in the world in terms of the total number of passengers (domestic and international), while maintaining its position at the top of the world’s busiest airports in terms of the number of international passengers.
As for the total global travel traffic, the American Atlanta Airport topped the list of world airports with more than 104.65 million passengers, followed by Dubai International Airport with more than 86.99 million passengers, then Dallas-Fort Worth Airport with 81.755 million passengers, while London Heathrow Airport ranked fourth with about 79.2 million passengers. Then Tokyo Airport ranked fifth with about 78.72 million passengers, Denver came next with 77.837 million passengers, then Istanbul Airport ranked seventh with more than 76 million passengers, Los Angeles Airport ranked eighth with more than 75 million passengers, Chicago Airport ranked ninth with 73.9 million passengers, and New Delhi Airport ranked eighth with more than 75 million passengers. Tenth with more than 72.2 million passengers.
As for international travel, Dubai International Airport maintained its position at the top of the world’s airports, and London Heathrow Airport came in second place with 74.9 million passengers, then Amsterdam Airport with more than 61.88 million passengers, followed by Paris with more than 61.41 million passengers, then Singapore with more than 58.41 million passengers, then Istanbul with 58.23 million passengers, followed by Incheon, Korea, with 55.76 million, Frankfurt in Germany, with about 54.1 million passengers, Doha Airport ranked ninth with more than 45.9 million international passengers, and Madrid Airport in the center. Tenth with 43.79 million passengers.
“Global air travel in 2023 was mainly driven by the international sector, which in turn was supported by several factors including the reopening of China and the increasing propensity towards travel despite macroeconomic conditions,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Director General of Airports Council International.
He added, “While US airports still dominate the 10 busiest airports, there are noticeable changes, including Dubai International Airport jumping to second place for the first time.”
