Paris 2024: shades of purple, installation work… Discovering the new athletics track at the Stade de France

In the gray weather and neutral tones of the speaker, it is a streak of purple color that is difficult not to notice. 102 days before the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Stade de France is in full transformation, Tuesday April 9. Setting for the rugby sevens competitions and the two closing ceremonies, it will also host the athletics and para-athletics events, on a brand new track.

At the foot of the stands, the high posts of the Rugby World Cup, the last major competition to have taken over the Dionysian enclosure, have disappeared to make way for the installation of the purple track, designed by the specialist company Mondo and designed for to be one of the visual markers of these Games.

Its installation is one of the major events of the work started at the end of the Rugby World Cup. Construction started at the beginning of January. First, the remains of the old track had to be removed. “Then two layers of asphalt are laid one after the other quite quickly, these are the bases of the track”, deciphers Alain Blondel, manager of the Paris 2024 athletics and para-athletics events, to the sound of the machines and works that resonate in the enclosure. The stands were also moved back around fifteen meters, and the pitch slightly reduced, to reorganize the infrastructures of the different workshops.

The tartan, partly composed of mussel shells crushed in an eco-responsible way, is then applied by the workers, who have been working since mid-March on the more than a thousand rolls to be unrolled.
