Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann appears in court as prosecutors turn over evidence

RIVERHEAD, Long Island (WABC) — The accused Gilgo Beach serial murderer returned to court Wednesday in his first appearance since February for prosecutors to deliver more discovery.

The discovery included evidence of Rex Heuermann’s properties and the judge wants it completed as soon as possible.

Prosecutors say there were 15 disclosures between the last court date and now.

Heuermann has been accused of murdering four female escorts in their 20s. The bodies of the Gilgo Beach Four (Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello) were found wrapped in burlap in Gilgo Beach.

On Wednesday, prosecutors revealed evidence involving Brainard-Barnes.

“Today alone, we provided the NYPD’s Barnes missing persons investigation, which is approximately 2,500 pages,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “We have a hard drive of approximately 12 terabytes regarding the nuclear DNA. We have digital extracts from several of the digital devices that were recovered from the defendant’s residence.”

Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, also attended Wednesday’s hearing while her attorney, Michael Brown, spoke briefly to reporters outside the courthouse.

Heuermann is due back in court on June 18. Judge Timothy Mazzie wants all evidence turned over by the end of July.
