The UAE and Germany hold their eighth meeting to discuss future directions for climate action

ABU DHABI, 18 April / WAM / The UAE and the Federal Republic of Germany held the eighth high-level meeting, which was hosted by Abu Dhabi as part of the completion of the Declaration of Intent for joint cooperation in the fields of energy between the two friendly countries, which the two sides signed at the beginning of 2017.

During the meeting, future trends and priorities that will be focused on in the field of energy, especially clean and renewable energy, and climate action efforts that are consistent with the goals of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) were discussed.

On the UAE side, the meeting was chaired by His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, and on the German side by His Excellency Stefan Wenzel, Parliamentary Minister of State at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, and it was attended by His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Al Kaabi, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure for Energy and Petroleum Affairs. Electricity, Water and Future Energy, His Excellency Dr. Nawal Al Hosani, Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment for the Green Development and Climate Change Sector at the Agency and the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and Mohammed Abdul Qadir Al Rumhi, CEO of Green Hydrogen Management at Masdar, And a number of officials from both sides

The meeting touched on ways to unify visions and goals for joint cooperation in the coming years, and the targets for 2024. They also discussed a set of directions in support of the energy sector and climate action.

His Excellency Engineer Sherif Al Olama explained the role of these bilateral meetings in unifying visions and goals and enhancing joint strategic cooperation during the coming years, and the importance and depth of the relationship that has linked the UAE and Germany over the past decades in various fields, especially those concerned with aspects of energy of various kinds, noting that the UAE and Germany are federal They share a firm commitment to sustainable development, a passion for development and innovation, and a keenness to embrace future trends in the energy sector, and that such meetings are an ideal platform to explore aspects of enhancing constructive dialogue between stakeholders in both countries, in a way that contributes to bringing about real change that meets the aspirations of both countries for the future. Zero carbon emissions, supporting climate action and energy transition efforts.

His Excellency stressed that the Emirati-German partnership aims to exchange experiences that contribute to raising energy efficiency, innovations and technology in clean energy, as well as scientific and technical cooperation in all aspects of the sector that supports the efforts of the two countries in transitioning towards clean, renewable energy.

He said: The UAE has always considered clean energy and climate action an opportunity to contribute to practical solutions to a global problem that affects everyone, so in 2017 we launched the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, while the strategy was updated last year with the aim of accelerating the energy transition and raising the contribution of clean energy to the total energy mix produced. In the country, the strategy aims to reduce emissions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, raise the contribution of renewable energy to three times by 2030, and raise the efficiency of individual and institutional consumption by 42% – 45%, in addition to raising the total installed capacity of clean energy to 19.8 gigawatts by 2030. And raising the contribution of installed clean energy capacity to the total energy mix by 2030 to (30%). The country also launched the National Hydrogen Strategy 2050, which represents a long-term plan to consolidate the country’s position as a global leader in the field of production and use of clean hydrogen, which aims to produce up to To 15 million tons annually by 2050.

In turn, His Excellency Stefan Wenzel congratulated the UAE on the “historic UAE Agreement” reached at the Conference of the Parties (COP28) regarding the ambitious global goals for renewable energy, energy efficiency and the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels, stressing the importance of the bilateral partnership between Germany and the UAE in the field of energy and climate as a platform. Ideal for moving from talk to action, sharing knowledge and experience and delivering on our global commitments at COP28.

During the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of fruitful cooperation in promoting clean energy and sustainable development, while they identified 4 work paths for the meeting, and proposed a set of activities within the framework of each of them to further accelerate the energy transition and climate action in the two friendly countries. The work paths included the hydrogen sector and sustainable aviation fuel ( SAF). They agreed on the need to create enabling policy and regulatory frameworks for the hydrogen value chain and sustainable aviation fuel, through bilateral working groups for hydrogen, renewable energy and systems integration, stressing the need to pump more investments into renewable energy projects with the aim of doubling capacity by 2030.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides held a session aimed at discussing the mechanisms for implementing the outcomes of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), the most important of which is the historic “UAE Agreement,” which established new standards for global climate action through the states parties reaching a fair and equitable agreement that is consistent with scientific results and contributes to reducing risks. Which countries face in order to achieve a balance between the requirements of development and climate action, and the steps taken by the UAE and Germany to support consensus, which is a decisive factor in reaching climate neutrality.
