Urgent.. Today the Security Council is discussing Palestine’s membership

Diplomatic sources spoke about the possibility of postponing the Security Council session scheduled for Thursday, to vote on granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations, until tomorrow, to make way for further deliberations.

Agence France-Presse reported: Several diplomatic sources confirmed that as of yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, the date of the session had not been decided.

In this context, Slovenia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Samuel Szbogar, said that “the matter is still pending.” The session will be held on Thursday or Friday.

On the other hand, the Palestinian ambassador to the international organization, Riyad Mansour, said that “the vote will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at three o’clock in the afternoon… I am sure of that.”

But the Maltese diplomatic mission, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of April, did not confirm this date nor did it deny it.

Agence France Presse said: “Regardless of the date of the session, the outcome of the vote seems predetermined in light of the United States’ opposition to the draft resolution presented by Algeria, which recommends that the General Assembly accept the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations.”

The Palestinian Authority had called for it in early April. The Security Council is currently considering reconsidering the application it submitted in 2011 for full membership in the United Nations, but the United States, which has veto power, has explicitly expressed its opposition to this effort.

It is worth noting that a country is accepted as a member. In the United Nations by a decision issued by the General Assembly by a two-thirds majority, but after a positive recommendation from the UN Security Council, it must be approved by at least 9 of the 15 members of the Council and on the condition that no permanent member state uses the right of veto.

According to For the Palestinian Authority, 137 of the 193 member states of the United Nations have to date recognized the State of Palestine.

On April 11, members of the UN Security Council failed to reach a consensus on Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations.< /p>
