War in Ukraine: government calls on Ukrainians to limit their energy consumption

Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din

The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy called on the population and businesses on Thursday April 18 to limit electricity consumption after recent Russian attacks on the country’s energy system. Relaying the request from the private electricity operator DTEK, the ministry asks “consumers, both private and industrial, to reduce the use of energy-consuming appliances during peak hours (7 p.m. to 10 p.m.)”.

He justified this measure by “significant damage caused to the electricity network” by Russian strikes, as well as a “sharp drop in temperatures” And “the resulting increase in the load on the electricity network”. Earlier, DTEK had already reported a “deficit” in the energy system, announcing possible “restrictions” for industry during peak hours.

“We are doing everything we can to keep the electrical system operating reliably, but we desperately need your help”the group said, urging “businesses and households to save electricity”. Since mid-March, Russia has launched a new campaign of missile and drone attacks against the Ukrainian energy network, damaging, according to kyiv, 80% of national electricity generation capacities.
