Green Hydrogen Summit lays out a roadmap for building the energy economy of the future

ABU DHABI, April 19, 2017 (WAM) – The Green Hydrogen Summit, hosted by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, Masdar, achieved great success and witnessed discussions aimed at exploring ways to accelerate the development of the global green hydrogen economy and support the transformation process in the energy sector.

The summit, which was held during the World Future Energy Summit, under the title “Building a Hydrogen Economy: From Dialogue to Reality,” witnessed the participation of a prominent group of high-level figures and experts in the sector, and included ministers from the UAE, Azerbaijan, Japan, and the Netherlands, and an elite group of policymakers and sector leaders. During the summit, His Excellency Boris Johnson, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, delivered a keynote speech in which he praised the pioneering role of the UAE, which represents one of the most important global centers supporting technological innovation. The summit also witnessed a speech by international adventurer Dr. Bertrand Picard, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Climate Impulse Foundation, who intends to launch the first flight around the world of a hydrogen-powered aircraft. He stressed the importance of holding the Green Hydrogen Summit and the role of Masdar in advancing the development of the green hydrogen sector. .

The summit included discussions between prominent figures from the global green hydrogen sector, which included many important topics such as the role of hydrogen in the UAE, Europe, the United States of America and Asia, benefiting from its potential in sectors such as steel and transportation, and ways to make projects more accessible to financing.

His Excellency Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan; His Excellency Yoshida Nobuhiro, Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan; and Frederik Wesselink, Special Envoy for Energy from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy of the Netherlands, shared their national strategies and policies to accelerate green hydrogen economies.

During the summit, Abu Dhabi’s low-carbon hydrogen policy and its ability to attract innovators, technology developers and key companies in the green hydrogen sector were also highlighted during the summit, in parallel with Masdar starting to develop pioneering green hydrogen projects at a competitive cost and by employing advanced technology.

On this occasion, Mohammed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said: “This year’s Green Hydrogen Summit was able to attract a group of prominent speakers who presented important ideas about the great potential of the green hydrogen economy, and discussed the most prominent challenges facing this sector. Green hydrogen is considered an essential element.” It is vital in achieving the transition towards sustainable energy in the UAE and contributes to supporting global efforts to remove carbon. Masdar is working to accelerate the pace of investment in green hydrogen with the aim of developing this sector and contributing to supporting economic diversification plans in the UAE and achieving the desired global transition towards clean energy.”

The summit concluded with a review of the “Guiding Climate Neutrality Efforts” tool, which works with artificial intelligence technology and allows for setting a common reference for current financing mechanisms and identifying the best policies and partnership models according to which it is possible to develop and expand the scope of technologies, innovations and strategies capable of accelerating the steps towards climate neutrality.

Masdar’s green hydrogen management aims to become a leading producer by 2030, which supports Abu Dhabi’s low-carbon hydrogen policy that was announced during the COP28 conference, and the conclusion of a strategic cooperation agreement between the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office and Masdar to enhance The UAE’s global position in the field of hydrogen.
