Paris 2024: "There is no characterized, known, identified threat against the Games"says Laurent Nuñez

If “the terrorist threat has been permanent in our country for many years”, “there is no characterized, known, identified threat against the Games”says the prefect of Paris, Laurent Nuñez, Friday April 19 on France Inter. He still recalls that the security system designed for this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games is “adapted to a very high level of terrorist threat” since France is in “emergency attack”the maximum level of the Vigipirate plan.

For these Olympic and Paralympic Games, France plans to use algorithmic video surveillance. It will be tested again, Saturday evening, during the Black Eyed Peas concert, at La Défense Arena, and, Sunday evening, for the PSG-OL match, at the Parc des Princes. This technology is criticized by several associations which fear, in particular, facial crimes. “There is no facial recognition, the law prohibits it”assures the prefect of Paris. “There is simply a use of video protection to detect abnormal things, for example a crowd movement in the opposite direction to the normal direction of traffic, the penetration of individuals into prohibited areas”explains Laurent Nuñez.

The police presence will be greatly increased in the run-up to the Olympic Games, with 30,000 law enforcement officers mobilized “on average” and “peaks of 45,000”, he explains.
