The Group of Seven confirms its opposition to any Israeli military operation in Palestinian Rafah

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven industrial nations and the High Representative of the European Union affirmed the strong opposition to the military operation planned to be implemented in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, warning of its catastrophic consequences for the civilian population. The ministers expressed – in the statement published by The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via the “X” blogging site – They expressed their regret for all the losses of civilian lives, in such “unacceptable” numbers. of civilians, including thousands of women, children and people in vulnerable situations who were killed in Gaza.

They also expressed their deep concern about internal displacement in the Gaza Strip and the risks involved in such forced displacement from Gaza, calling for Israel must “act” in accordance with its obligations under international law and treat individuals with humanity and dignity, and should conduct comprehensive and transparent investigations into credible allegations of wrongdoing and ensure accountability for any abuses or violations.

In order for aid to flow to Gaza in light of the imminent risk of famine for the majority of Gazans, calling for the rapid implementation of the steps announced by the Government of Israel; Including a commitment to expand the flow of aid through land crossings, open new land crossings, and facilitate aid access to northern Gaza, where humanitarian needs are most acute, including by opening more roads leading to Gaza.

The statement welcomed the efforts aimed at establishing a sea corridor to increase the flow and transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza, in coordination with the United Nations, indicating that these corridors must complement expanded and sustainable aid flows by land, and not be an alternative.   He called on Israel to make greater efforts to ensure the protection of international and local humanitarian aid workers, journalists and Palestinian civilians, to work to improve the avoidance of “humanitarian conflict,” including communications, and to seek full accountability for incidents of harm to which aid workers are exposed.< /p>

 

The G7 industrial ministers welcomed the “Food for Gaza” initiative, launched by Italy, in cooperation with United Nations organizations such as the FAO and the World Food Programme. They also welcomed the new Palestinian Authority government, stressing their country’s readiness to support the Palestinian Authority, which they said must “carry out reforms.”
