The Security Council fails to adopt a resolution recommending the acceptance of the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations

New York, April 19 / WAM / The United States of America used its veto power against a draft Arab resolution submitted by Algeria to the UN Security Council, recommending that the General Assembly accept the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
12 of the Council’s 15 members voted in favor of the resolution, the United States opposed it, while the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained from voting.
Algeria’s representative in the Council, Ambassador Ammar Ben Jama, said in an intervention prior to the voting process that accepting full membership of the State of Palestine is a decisive step towards correcting a long-standing injustice, and will represent a clear signal that the international community stands by the Palestinian people.
He called for addressing the historical injustice to which the Palestinian people were exposed and for rebalancing the scales of justice.
He stressed that Palestine’s admission to the United Nations strengthens the two-state solution and prevents the occupation authorities from destroying the Palestinian state and the prospects for peace.
On April 2, Palestine sent an official letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in which it requested renewed consideration of its application submitted to the United Nations in 2011 to join the United Nations.
