American philosopher Daniel Dennett dies in the US

American philosopher and cognitive scientist Daniel Dennett died in the USA, he was 82 years old. About it writes The New York Times, citing Dennett’s wife. According to her, the cause of death was complications from a lung disease.

Daniel Dennett was born on March 28, 1942 in Boston. He graduated from Harvard University in 1963. Dennett later received his PhD from Oxford University.

The philosopher worked at the University of California. Since 1971, he taught at Tufts University and taught courses at Harvard, Pittsburgh, Oxford, and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. In 2012, during a visit to Moscow, she gave a lecture at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University.

Since the late 1960s, Dennett has been developing a theory of consciousness. The scientist believed that all science is based on objective judgments and empirical data that do not depend on the observer.

The philosopher is considered one of the adherents of the so-called new atheism – a system of views based on the idea of ​​religion as a disease of modern society, which should be combated using scientific methods.

In 2004, the American Humanist Association awarded Dennett the title of Humanist of the Year.

In 2007, Dunnett was awarded the Richard Dawkins Award, an annual award given by the Atheist Alliance of America.

In 2012, Dennett received the Erasmus Prize. The award has been awarded since 1958 to institutions and people who have made a significant contribution to European culture, public life, and social sciences.
