This came during the participation of the Minister of Environment, today, Saturday, in the opening of the activities of the /REAL LIFE/project competition of the University Students Union. The American University, which is an annual global event aimed at enabling students to participate in providing sustainable development solutions, in the presence of Dr. Tarek Shawky, former Minister of Education and Chancellor of the American University, Dr. Ahmed Dalal, President of the American University in Cairo, Dr. Salah El Haggar, President of the American University Student Union, and a group of academics. And experts, youth, and students of various universities. 

Yasmine Fouad said that one of her biggest dreams when she assumed responsibility for the Ministry of Environment was to find young people protecting, preserving, and communicating with the environment, and for them to be the ones who innovate and provide solutions. At that time, Egypt will be Capable of drawing a bright future for future generations.

The Minister of Environment expressed her happiness at participating for the third time in the activities of this competition, which aims to enhance youth participation in facing environmental challenges, praising the choice of the competition topic each time and expanding the participation base from universities. The other, and enhancing the participation of students and youth through innovation and critical thinking to find solutions to the problems and challenges facing their country. Major crises such as climate change, whose effects are felt by everyone in daily life, and also other crises such as the preservation of biodiversity, how the ecosystem is connected to each other, and the impact of pollution, explaining that the environment is a complex field, which requires collective efforts from various parties and authorities to confront its problems, and for everyone to be able To confront these challenges.

The Minister of Environment stressed 3 important messages, regarding the topics of sustainable financing, the revolving economy and social impact, noting the importance of sustainable financing, which is based on taking social and environmental dimensions into account when financing projects, so it works The government is striving to raise awareness and change the way the banking and non-banking sectors deal with projects and businesses.

She pointed out that two years ago, the Central Bank issued a decision obliging all banks in Egypt to create new departments for sustainable financing, but the decision faced a challenge in finding Human resources specialized in this field, especially from young people, and one of the lessons learned for the Egyptian government was how to create a supportive climate for implementing the measures required to achieve a circular economy and sustainable development, and the most important thing is investing in human resources and developing education and adapting it for this goal. 

< p>The Minister of Environment drew attention to Egypt’s experience in confronting the challenge of burning rice straw that causes the black cloud, as a true annual model of a revolving economy, sustainable financing and social impact, by shifting to collect this straw, benefit from it, and create job opportunities for farmers. This achieved the reuse of agricultural waste, preventing pollution, reducing global warming emissions, and generating income for the Egyptian farmer.

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Dalal, President of the American University in Cairo, expressed his happiness with the participation of this large number of students from different universities. In the competition, he considered it a good opportunity to exchange knowledge, experiences and initiatives, pointing to the measures taken by the American University within the framework of its commitment to sustainability, whether at the research, technical, management and partnership levels, and encouraging students to find innovative solutions to environmental challenges that are an obstacle to development.

He said that one of the important topics is the digital management of natural resources and the green economy, and we seek to encourage young minds this year to present innovative ideas in the field of environmental entrepreneurship to confront environmental challenges and their social impacts through a distinguished educational journey. 

In turn, Dr. Salah reviewed Al-Hajjar, President of the American University Student Union, described the experience of the American University Student Union this year in coming up with the competition, starting with choosing its topic and organizing this global event, to include 3 tracks, which are the circular economy, sustainable finance, and social impacts, which are the heart of sustainable development.

He explained. The competition includes a number of interactive workshops on these topics to ensure communication between the various participants to exchange knowledge, indicating that with the multiple definitions of sustainable development, the circular economy has now become the heart of sustainability. Which requires converting it into an action plan that accelerates the implementation of sustainable development goals. 

It is noteworthy that the" “REAL LIFE” It is one of the oldest projects of the American University Student Union, and it aims to create a link between the university experience and labor market opportunities by developing students’ skills. The main idea of ​​the competition this year revolves around green entrepreneurship, and the event includes lectures by influential figures, field visits, and helping participants develop their solutions and innovations.
