Prisoner killed in cell fire horror as guards make grim discovery after mystery blaze

A man has died at a Melbourne remand centre after a fire broke out in a cell.

The 22-year-old was found unconscious in the cell at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Ravenhall, the city’s west, about 8:50pm on Sunday after the blaze was extinguished.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

Police have launched an investigation into the death.

The male-only centre can hold up to 673 accused criminals awaiting trial or appeal in a maximum security setting.

It has a steady stream of about 150 new prisoners entering each week, according to the state’s Department of Justice and Community Safety.

About the same amount are leaving the prison weekly, either being freed or sent to another prison having been found guilty of a crime.

More to come.
