Schuster's exit nears as $200k payout plan revealed

The Manly Sea Eagles and promising youngster Josh Schuster could finally be set to part ways as early as this week after a drawn-out process.

According to 9News and The Sydney Morning Herald reporter Michael Chammas, both parties are close to agreeing on a mutual termination agreement which would see Schuster pocket around $200,000 per season for the next three years.

Schuster is contracted to the club until the end of 2027 on a deal worth around $800,000 per season. However, the deal is not scheduled to start until next season.

The 22-year-old has not featured in the NRL this season, instead appearing for feeder side Blacktown on four occasions in NSW Cup.

Reports suggest meetings between the NRL’s salary cap team and the Rugby League Players’ Association have occurred to help finalise the termination, which would see Schuster included in Manly’s salary cap at $200,000 per season until the end of 2027.

This would free up $600,000 for Manly in their salary cap with the club unlikely to carry the gap.

After negotiations spanning several weeks, a decision is expected to be reached by the end of the week.

The Sea Eagles have already paid Schuster $400,000 since the November 1 start of the rugby league financial year but will not have to pay him any more in 2024.
