Revealed: Why Arsenal will replace their club crests on their shirts for next season

Arsenal are set to replace the club’s crest with the iconic cannon on all of their shirts for next season.

The cannon has become synonymous with the north London outfit ever since they were founded in 1886, with this traced back to the roots of the club, while it also explains the Gunners’ nickname.

Arsenal’s shirts have used the cannon instead of the badge before, most notably on their green third kit this season, along with the 2022-23 black away kit.

However, according to The Athletic, next season will be the first time in recent years that just the cannon will be emblazoned across all of Arsenal’s shirts.

This means the traditional club crest, which features the cannon and has the words ‘Arsenal’ inscribed on it, will not be in use.

The move is motivated by not only the popularity of the cannon, but a desire to reflect the club’s rich history, culture and tradition.

Arsenal’s move is not the first of its kind, with Liverpool once using the liver bird, accompanied by the letters LFC instead of their usual badge.

Meanwhile, Man United developed an away kit in August 2023 that didn’t feature the club’s crest, instead focusing around a ‘red devil’ design.

However, it will be the first time Arsenal’s home shirt has had just a cannon on it since 1977-78.

The 1989-90 campaign saw a cannon used, but AFC was also inscribed on the shirt.

It is unclear what the future of the crest will be, but The Athletic report goes onto claim that the crest is going nowhere as it remains an integral part of the club’s identity.

The decision to use solely the cannon is in place for an initial season, when it will then be decided what will happen afterwards.

Mikel Arteta’s side last wore the green kit with the cannon on it against Bayern Munich last week, when they exited the Champions League via a 3-2 aggregate defeat.

The Gunners do sit top of the Premier League though and they return to league action on Tuesday when they entertain Chelsea at the Emirates.
