‘Boy Kills World’ Interview: Famke Janssen and Brett Gelman

On April 26, the new action thriller ‘Boy Kills World’, directed by Moritz Mohr and starring Bill Skarsgård (‘John Wick: Chapter 4’), Jessica Rothe (‘La La Land’), Michelle Dockery, opens in theaters (‘The Gentlemen’), Brett Gelman (‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’), Famke Janssen (‘X-Men’) and Sharlto Copley (‘The A-Team’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Famke Janssen and Brett Gelman about their work on ‘Boy Kills World’, the plot, its characters, the action, their first reaction to the script and their work with director Moritz Mohr.

Moviefone: To start, Famke, can you talk about your character and why everyone fears him?

Famke Janssen: Well, I think they have misunderstood her. I think it’s about someone coming to grips with her past, and it’s been a little iffy and shady. So now you’re on a very slippery slope of a state of mind that’s not stable, a family history that’s probably very problematic, and a very violent, obviously present time that we’re in, in the world and in this movie. So, I would say unhinged, to put it lightly.

MF: Brett, can you talk about your character and his strange commitment to theater? Did you draw influence from any former directors you’ve worked with?

Brett Gelman: It was fun. I mean, it was cool to be some kind of maniacal dictator who wants to be an artist and a writer. There’s nothing more fun than playing a crazy director, even if it’s just for a few moments like it happens in the movie. Yeah, I’m always channeling some of the weird directors I’ve worked with in the past who would go crazy, or acting teachers.

MF: Famke, what was your first reaction to the script and the universe of ‘Boy Kills World’?

FJ: It was different. For me it was all about what the execution would be like. What will this look like visually? That’s where I think I was pleasantly surprised. We had an idea about it in terms of production design, costumes, the stunt team and the stunt coordinator and the visuals of it all, and the acting. But it’s a visual feast unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It is a hyperreality.

MF: Finally, Brett, what was your experience collaborating with director Moritz Mohr on this project?

GB: Moritz is the opposite of how Gideon behaves as a director in the film. Moritz is like someone you always imagine holding a chocolate bar and laughing. But in a healthy way. It was a dream to work with him. He is the perfect combination of someone who knows exactly what he wants, but is also willing to collaborate with you. The best type of directors, beyond having vision, are directors who have vision and then also enjoy the actors. Because many of them hate us. Some of us deserve to be hated. Moritz did not give us less affection. Moritz gave us the love of Moritz and you can quote me on that. That’s the best quote I’ve ever quoted.

What is the plot of ”Boy Kills World’?

The new film stars Bill Skarsgård as a young man known only as “Boy,” who swears revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty who left to the orphaned child. , deaf and voiceless.

Driven by his inner voice, which he adopted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is let loose on the eve of the annual sacrifice of dissidents. Chaos ensues when Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a rage of slaughter and bloodshed.

While trying to find his way in this delusional realm, Boy soon joins a desperate resistance group, all the while arguing with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.
