Kirill Serebrennikov presented the opera “The Marriage of Figaro” in Berlin

Director Kirill Serebrennikov presented his production of Mozart’s opera The Marriage of Figaro in Germany. Premiere took place April 27 at one of the main musical theaters in Berlin, the Komische Oper.

In the play involved international team of singers and actors. Along with famous European opera singers (Hubert Zapyur, Nadya Mchantaf, Penny Sofroniadou), actors of Russian origin – Georgy Kudrenko, Nikita Kukushkin and Nikita Elenev – played roles in it.

This is the second Mozart opera that Serebrennikov staged on the stage of the Komische Oper. In 2023, he performed at this theater with the production “This is what everyone does.” Serebrennikov originally produced this performance together with the Zurich Opera House in 2018. He worked on it while under house arrest in Russia.

The director’s plans are to stage Mozart’s entire “da Ponte trilogy”. It includes “That’s What Everyone Do”, “The Marriage of Figaro” and “Don Giovanni”. The premiere of Don Giovanni at the Komische Oper is scheduled for 2025.

• Kirill Serebrennikov is a famous Russian theater and film director. After the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, he took an anti-war stance. In March 2022, Serebrennikov left Russia.
• After Serebrennikov’s departure, Russian theaters canceled performances by him or excluded the director’s name from posters and programs – like other cultural figures. The general director of the Bolshoi Theater, Vladimir Urin, admitted that this was done because of the anti-war position of the creators of the performances.
