It’s a unique experience that awaits a couple somewhere on the planet. Airbnb, Olympic partner, will offer two people the opportunity to spend an exceptional night in the legendary Salon de l’Horloge of the Musée d’Orsay. They will be able to visit the museum, watch the opening ceremony of the Games from the museum terrace and sleep in a room specially designed by Mathieu Lehanneur, the designer of the Olympic torch.
To win this exclusive stay, Airbnb is going to its website on May 21 when reservations open with a rule: first come, first served. franceinfo was able to speak with Mathieu Lehanneur.
What should the lucky winners of this extraordinary night expect?
Mathieu Lehanneur: We are in the heart of the Musée d’Orsay which was a former railway station. And in this museum there is an incredible room which is the Clock Room. It is a large space which is generally left completely empty but to which many visitors and tourists come because there is this large historic clock which measures almost five meters in diameter and which is also transparent. It is obviously visible from the outside when you see the Musée d’Orsay, but from the inside, between the hands and the Roman numerals, there are windows, so you have a view of Paris. Except that this space is monumental, sublime, but would absolutely not be comfortable, or even intimate, to spend a night there.
The idea was therefore to recreate a bedroom in this space, obviously retaining the highlight of the show which is this clock. It’s a real room that we can use but obviously, we’re not going to build solid walls, it’s a decor, all of that is ephemeral. On the other hand, you will have a concierge who will be there, who will take care of you, who can take you to the bathrooms. So, it will be the museum’s toilets, because we’re not in a hotel! When the lucky ones arrive, they will have to cross the entire museum, so we can see in any case that we are not at all in the logic of a hotel, however prestigious they may be. We are indeed in for a night that will be experimental.
