"They should be able to distinguish between the government and people who just want to live in peace" : in Israel, incomprehension in the face of pro-Palestinian demonstrations
Support for the Palestinians of Gaza, opposition to the war and, sometimes, excesses and certain slogans which flirt with uninhibited anti-Semitism: seen from Israel, not many people understand how the emotion of October 7 could slowly drift towards fierce opposition to Israel and everything the country stands for.
In the weekly rallies for peace and the return of hostages, the incomprehension is even greater, particularly among students, like Shaked. Because she feels like she shares a certain number of demands with the campus demonstrators.
Since October 7, Shaked has participated in most of the demonstrations in support of the hostages, she defends peace, condemns the violent Israeli military intervention, and can no longer bear to see images of Gazan civilians dead under the bombings of her army. And she demands a truce.
“If I, as a Jew who lives here and who has been affected by what is happening, can say that I do not want the death of innocent civilians on the other side, the same should be true for people elsewhere who do not are not affected by the conflict, she continues. They should be able to distinguish between the government and the people who live here and just want to live in peace.”
Shaked lived in Berlin for two years. Her boyfriend, German, is still there. And for the moment, she says, he doesn’t want her to come back, for fear that she will be the victim of anti-Semitic acts.
