Turkey’s largest bank has again tightened conditions for Russians

One of the largest Turkish banks, DenizBank, has again tightened the conditions for opening accounts for Russians since the beginning of the year and has practically stopped approving such applications, RBC writes, citing two intermediaries who help Russian citizens obtain cards from Turkish banks. Refusals also come from clients with a residence permit and registration in Turkey.

According to one of the intermediaries, out of ten applications from Russians to open an account receives approval only one. DenizBank makes exceptions only for clients with a large deposit – from 100 thousand dollars.

Another intermediary said that since 2024, DenizBank no longer opens accounts for foreigners, including Russians, as tourists. If previously you needed a foreign passport to open an account, now the bank requires you to provide a residence permit and registration in Turkey, and makes a decision only after checking the client.

At the same time, the source of the Russian state agency TASS in the banking sector in Turkey reportedthat DenizBank has not introduced any bans on opening accounts for Russians, but applications undergo enhanced checks due to possible violation of sanctions against Russia.

  • After the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, DenizBank tightened its service conditions for Russians several times. In particular, at the end of 2022 there was sharply increased the deposit amount increased almost 10 times to five thousand dollars and set the minimum size of outgoing SWIFT transfer at 10 thousand dollars. The bank also required clients from Russia to provide documents confirming their right to reside in Turkey.
