Emotional moment parents of Aussie brothers killed in Mexico break down after flying overseas to identify their bodies – as heartbroken girlfriend reveals tragic voicemail

The heartbroken parents of the Australian surfing brothers killed during a surfing trip in Mexico have broken their silence.

Callum Robinson, 33, and his 30-year-old brother, Jake, were travelling with their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad, 30, in the Baja California region when they disappeared on April 27.

The three men’s remains were found at the bottom of a well on Saturday, about 2km from Rosarito, where they had been scheduled to stay at an Airbnb.

Each had a single gunshot wound to the head.

Three Mexican nationals – Jesus Gerardo Garcia Cota, his girlfriend Ari Gisel Garcia Cota and his brother Christian Alejandro Garcia – were arrested on Wednesday and charged with kidnapping.

Martin and Debra Robinson broke down in tears as they spoke from San Diego, California, on Tuesday (local time), where they shared their heartbreak over their sons deaths.

‘It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Callum and Jake have been murdered,’ Ms Robinson said.

‘Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us.

‘We also mourn the loss of Carter Rhaod, a close friend.

‘They were young men enjoying their passion of surfing together.

‘Now it’s time to bring them home to family and friends – and the ocean waves in Australia. Please live bigger, shine brighter and love harder in their memory.’

She said thanked those who had offered their condolences and said they had been ‘overwhelmed with the outpouring of emotions and support’.

‘We have always been very proud of their academic and sporting achievements and admired their life choices,’ Ms Robinson said.

She spoke of Callum’s ‘larger than life character’ and his sporting achievements including playing professional lacrosse in America.

She described Jake as a ‘happy, gentle and compassionate soul’ who was pursuing a career in medicine.

‘Jake’s passion was surfing and it was no coincidence that many of his hospitals that he worked in were close to surfing beaches.’

Their comments come after they visited the morgue in Ensenada, Mexico, to identify their sons’ bodies on Sunday (local time).

Jake, who worked in Perth as a doctor, had flown to the US two weeks earlier to visit Callum, who was living in San Diego with his girlfriend Emily Horwath.

On Tuesday, Ms Horwath shared a voicemail from Callum on Instagram, with the caption: ‘Will be playing this on repeat.’

In the voice message, Callum said: ‘Happy Tuesday, good morning! It’s 11.11 and I’m just thinking about you.

‘Just wanted to drop you a quick message and say, hello baby – hope you’re having a phenomenal start to your day.

‘I’m sensing a big grin on your face for some reason today. I hope you’re full of positivity and smiles. Cheers baby, miss you.’

Mexican police have revealed they found three abandoned tents splattered with blood at a campsite south of the town of Ensenada.

Authorities also found shell casings at the campsite where the three men were last seen with further investigations leading them to the well about 2km away.

Three bodies, as well as a fourth body believed to be a local rancher, were discovered at the bottom of the clifftop well.

It took rescuers about 20 hours to pull the bodies out of the well, with physical characteristics, including hair and clothes, matching the three missing men.

Baja California’s Attorney-General, María Andrade Ramírez, said the murder investigation would probe whether the men were killed in an alleged robbery.

She said the alleged thieves were likely interested in the mens’ truck, a white Chevrolet Colorado pickup, and more specifically in the tyres.

‘When they tried to get the vehicle, the victims opposed the robbery, the robbers were armed with a firearm and apparently shot the victims,’ Ms Andrade Ramírez said

Ms García Cota, 23, allegedly had one of the missing men’s mobile phones.

Police were able to make the arrests when a phone belonging to one of the Australian brothers phones was turned on and pinged a mobile tower in the area.

The style of the executions have sparked fears locally about the possible involvement of drug cartels which are rife in the region (pictured: the trio's vehicle was later found burnt-out in the Santo Tomás area)

All three suspects were allegedly found in possession of an assortment of methamphetamines and other illegal drugs, according to local news outlets.

The alleged murders have not been linked to organised crime, but investigators have yet to rule it out.

Instagram posts shared by Callum just before the trio vanished showed them relaxing at Rosarito Beach, where they had been surfing and camping while travelling around the west coast of Mexico.

The last image posted to Callum’s Instagram showed the group had made it to San Miguel beach in Ensenada before they vanished without a trace.

One chilling picture showed their white Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck at a beach in Rosarito, which police believe was the same vehicle later discovered burnt out.

‘… and it begins,’ Callum had captioned the image, alongside an emoji of the Mexican flag, at the start of the trio’s doomed trip.

The Robinson brothers had attended Coachella before travelling to Mexico to surf.

Callum was based in the US where he was an accomplished lacrosse player known as ‘the Big Koala’.

His brother Jake worked in regional hospitals across Australia.

Mr Rhoad worked in technology services in San Diego.
