DIRECT. Giro 2024: a strong breakaway to trap the sprinters? Follow Step 5
The fifth stage of the Giro, between Genova and Lucca (178 km), is a priori intended for sprinters, like the two previous ones. But the grueling Passo del Bracco (15.3 km at 4%), at the start of the route, could benefit backpackers to form a strong escape. Filippo Ganna (Ineos-Grenadiers) had already tried his luck on Tuesday in the Capo Mele, a few kilometers from the finish, before being swallowed up by the peloton.
If the sprinters compete for victory again, Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek), wearing the cyclamen jersey for the points classification, comes forward as the favorite. The Italian, who brought this tunic to Rome last year, dominated his competitors on Tuesday in Andora, after being beaten only by Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quickstep) on the first mass finish of the Tour of Italy 2024 Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Victorious), on the podium on Tuesday, will be serious outsiders, as will Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a bike) and Caleb Ewan (Jayco-AlUla).
