Paris 2024: the Games must not be "the opportunity to test working conditions unfavorable to employees"warns the CGT

It’s necessary “manage to ensure that the Olympic Games are not an opportunity to test new working conditions unfavorable to employees”warns, Thursday May 9 on France Culture, Denis Gravouil, confederal secretary of the CGT, 78 days before the Paris 2024 Games. He explains that numerous strike notices have been filed in sectors such as “transport, health, public service”.

Denis Gravouil wonders what is being done to “workers who will see their workload modified or increased during the Olympic Games”. It alerts in particular on the “sewer workers who will be extremely involved in ensuring that the Seine is finally swimmable for the swimming events”but also on the case of “health professionals”. The trade unionist fears that “the influx of tourists [n’ait] an impact on medical emergencies, which are already extremely tense.” “We have serious doubts about the capacity of our emergency services to cope with this influx, in particular due to lack of personnel”, he assures.

The confederal secretary of the CGT deplores the fact that certain employees will have to “work on Sunday” or see each other “remove their weekly rest periods”. “This is certainly not progress” social, but rather “regression”, he denounces. Denis Gravouil confides that he even “the feeling that a certain number of people will make more or less considerable profits, produced by the work of those who will have more work”. He therefore calls for supervision of these working conditions, but also “bonuses and salary increases”.

Denis Gravouil also fears that the missions entrusted to Games volunteers are similar to “hidden work”. He thus wishes to make the difference between the volunteers who fall under “of the associative and sporting movement” and those who achieve “work must be paid”as in “reception or cleaning”. The confederal secretary of the CGT hopes that there will therefore be a “strict control”.
