Minister of Irrigation: The ancient Egyptian civilization was a pioneer in developing irrigation techniques

Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, said that Egypt has a long heritage with regard to irrigation, as the ancient Egyptian civilization based on the banks of the Nile River was a pioneer in developing irrigation techniques that are among the oldest in history, and therefore there is great importance for the establishment of the United Nations Organization United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” To protect the world heritage of irrigation in Egypt by supporting the Ministry of Irrigation in establishing an irrigation museum through the “Water Museum Programme” affiliated with UNESCO to preserve the ministry’s heritage and document ancient and modern Egyptian civilization in good water management, and to support the ministry in preserving irrigation facilities of a heritage nature as one of the axes of cooperation with the organization.

 

It came. This was during a meeting between the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation and Nuria Sanz, Regional Director of the UNESCO Office. In Cairo, where Dr. Sweilem welcomed Sanz, expressing his happiness at her visit to the Ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, which is an opportunity to inspect the Ministry’s central library and the proposed site for establishing an irrigation museum at the Ministry’s headquarters.

 

He pointed out The Minister stressed the importance of supporting UNESCO. The Ministry is responsible for the restoration of important historical documents “books, maps, reports, and photographs.” In light of the distinguished capabilities that UNESCO possesses in this field, contributing to the production of a documentary film on the history of irrigation in Egypt, and also benefiting from the “Memory of the World” program affiliated with UNESCO in documenting archaeological irrigation facilities and introducing the irrigation heritage in Egypt.

 

Suwailem praised the decision recently issued by the Executive Council of UNESCO. By consensus of its members and with the support of the organization’s 194 member states, which includes the organization’s member states’ support for the international initiative to support adaptation and resilience in the water sector in the face of climate change (AWARe), stressing the importance of the organization’s continued support for the initiative, and providing the necessary funds to train and raise the capabilities of workers in the water sector in African countries and present the needs of Countries proposed projects to adapt to climate change in the water sector.

 

 

He also praised the sponsorship of UNESCO To the Regional Training Center for Water Resources and Irrigation affiliated with the Ministry, indicating the Ministry’s desire to enhance cooperation with the organization to continue developing the training system and building the capabilities of workers in the field of water, whether Egyptian or African, to benefit from the distinguished capabilities possessed by the organization and to benefit at the same time from the distinguished logistical capabilities that Owned by the Ministry, which is the Regional Training Center, which was launched to become the African Center for Water and Climate Adaptation, where it is possible to benefit from UNESCO’s capabilities in the field of data analysis to improve the quality of the training programs implemented at the center, and also benefit from the “UNESCO platform.” To provide funds for training courses.

 

 

After the meeting, Noria Sanz inspected the Ministry’s central library and learned about the important holdings it contains. A meeting was held with a number of Ministry officials to arrange for the establishment of a museum in the Ministry building in the New Administrative Capital and to inspect a number of sites where the museum was proposed to be established.
