REPORTING. Paris 2024: companies are turning to bicycle rental to facilitate travel for their employees

Passes for the Paris 2024 Games are soon available to users. An online platform opens Friday May 10. It will then be possible to retrieve a QR code essential for crossing the area around the Olympic sites, such as the Concorde or the Seine. Several thousand people are affected.

These passes will be given to residents, but also to people who work in these secure spaces where cars will be prohibited. Many metros will also be cut off during the competition. Some companies have decided to rent bicycles to make it easier for their employees to travel this summer. A request that is good for Ile-de-France bike rental companies.

Hidden in a cellar under their premises, the Tim Mobilité warehouse is full to bursting. Mathis, 18, has worked in this bicycle rental company since September. “There is the stock of bikes that are ready to be sent. There are quite a few since the Olympics are coming.” But before delivering them, the young employee must first prepare the bikes. “You see, the handlebars are not received straight, you have to put them straight. We can test the transmission, if the gears shift well. In general we do three bikes a day, it could happen that we do four or five because there are more demands.”

The company launched a new subscription in February, a six-month rental instead of 36, specially made for the Olympic Games. “There was a demand that was quite strong. We were very busy”observes Jérôme Blanc, the co-founder of Tim Mobilité. “We have companies that are sponsors or that organize events during the Games. We also have hotels that have problems bringing in staff, particularly in the Parisian ‘golden triangle’.”

The San Régis hotel is located precisely in this area. The director, Sarah Georges, has been thinking about renting bikes for a while. With the Olympics, it has become essential: “Today, the Place du Trocadéro is being installed, so traffic is very disrupted. The Champs-Élysées (metro) station will be closed before the opening ceremony and throughout the Olympic period.” After surveying its 44 employees, it decided to order four bicycles for the moment.
