The former president of Mauritania is enslaved from the upcoming elections

The former president of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who was convicted to five years in prison in 2023 on charges of illicit enrichment, has been excluded from participating in the presidential elections scheduled for next June 29, due to his failure to gather sufficient support, according to what his spokesman said.

His spokesman, Mohamed Ould Jibril, denounced the current support system, describing it as “an obstruction to democracy,” and added: “We are victims of the government’s conspiracy.”

It is noteworthy that Ould Abdel Aziz ruled Mauritania until 2019, and if he had not been excluded, he would have faced the current candidate, Mohamed Ould Cheikh Al-Ghazouani, who was one of his prominent aides. In Mauritania, presidential candidates must have the support of 100 municipal council members, but the presidency controls most of these councils.

Dozens of opposition candidates expressed their objection to the dominance of the majority parties and their selection of their opponents in the elections, and they considered this to be a disruption of the democratic process.

At the same time, the head of the “Alliance for Justice and Democracy” party presented His candidacy file for the elections, and he became the fifth candidate to submit his file to the Constitutional Council.

The current candidate, Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani, appointed a political committee for his election campaign, which included a number of politicians, including some opponents.< /p>

The country is heading towards an exciting electoral period, as political competition appears to be intensifying amid protests against the electoral system and political dominance. The issue of democracy and the rights of candidates and voters remains the focus of attention of the international and local community, and will have a major impact on the country’s future and political stability.
