Scottie Scheffler chasing down leader at PGA Championship – after shocking 6am arrest on his way to the course… follow along for updates

Another hole, another birdie for that man Scottie Scheffler.

On the 12th, the world No. 1 has just fired into a ridiculous approach to three-foot, before holeing the putt and moving one back from the leader Xander Schauffele.

The crowd liked that a LOT.

Here he comes… that’s another birdie for Scottie on the second – his 11th hole of the day. He had a five-foot putt and sunk it, straight down the middle of the cup.

That takes him to -7 for the tournament (-3 for the day), and up to T3 on the leaderboard.

It’s been an incredible day so far for little-known Mark Hubbard, who currently sits -8 for the tournament, and is -2 through six holes today.

The Denver-born golfer, 34, has a best-ever major finish of T51, but is currently second, behind Xander Schauffele.

Four players are then tied for third, with Harris English, Alex Noren, Collin Morikawa and Austin Eckroat all currently out on the course now and battling at -7.

Scheffler is among a five-player group one further back on -6.

It’s fair to say Rory McIlroy may welcome a slight distraction from his own saga – a reminder that he announced he is divorcing his wife Erica Stoll on Monday.

He played very well on day one yesterday, and is due out on course at 3pm ET today.

Xander Schauffele, meanwhile, broke the Valhalla course record yesterday, and recorded the joint-lowest score ever in a major championship with his brilliant 62. He’s back out to try and stop atop the leaderboard at 2:38pm ET.

Tiger Woods is right on the cut line at +1 after back-to-back bogeys to finish his first round yesterday, and he’ll have a big fight on his hands when he begins – at 2:49pm ET.

It’s calmed down a little bit for the embattled world No. 1 out on the course at Valhalla. After his birdie-bogey-birdie start, he’s settled into his rhythm with three straight pars. He still sits -5 for the tournament, T9 overall and -1 for the day.

Never simple for the big fella. On 12 (his third hole), Scheffler has now just rolled in a monster birdie putt (see below).

He’s now back to -5, and T6 on the leaderboard.

The world No. 1 back down to earth with a bump as he bogeys the second hole, missing a five-foot par putt.

Some more incredible news coming in regarding Scheffler’s arrest this morning.

Here is the full police citation, just released:

Detective Gillis was directing traffic into Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Course due to the road being closed in both directions from an earlier fatal collision.

Listed subject was driving eastbound to gain access to the course. Subject pulled into the westbound lanes, where outbound traffic was flowing and to avoid backed up traffic.

Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lanes, in full LMPD uniform and a hi-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket. Dotective Gillis stopped subject and attempted to give instructions.

Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.

He was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment by emergency medical personnel.

Detective Gillis’ uniform pants, valued at approximately $80 were damaged beyond repair.

You can’t keep a good man down. Wow. What a start for Scheffler, who puts all the crazy events of the morning behind him to start with a birdie.

His tee shot found the rough down the right-hand side of the fairway, before he nearly sunk his approach for eagle, before tapping in a birdie.

That takes him 6th in the leaderboard at -5.

‘Biggest cheer by far on the tenth for Scottie. People shouted ‘free Scottie’ after his drive, and ‘I need your lawyer’s number’

‘He seemed very calm on the range, hit a few shots, chatted to his team.’

Here we go… the world No. 1 is about to head onto the course. Let’s see how this first drive goes amid all the pressure he’s been under.

…and he looks in good spirits after his remarkable morning.

We’ve got the first official comments from the world No 1 after his return to Valhalla:

‘This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

‘Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.’

…there’s already some golf being played at the PGA Championship this morning.

It’s been a rough morning for Rich Beem, who’s +5 through three holes and +13 for the tournament.

Up the top end of the leaderboard, Harris English birdied the first and has climbed to T11 at -4.

We’ve just had word from the PGA over the fatality that occurred outside the course this morning…

‘This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones.’

Well, 36 minutes to be exact… and he’s expected to be out at the tee box on time.

It’s an incredible morning that has unfolded at Valhalla.

Scheffler has just arrived at Valhalla, in the back of a black Range Rover alongside his agent Blake Smith. When asked by reporter Marty Smith for a comment on his morning, Scheffler simply said: ‘Love you, Marty.’

Cameras are trained on the entrance to Valhalla, where the world No. 1 is expected to return any minute now.

Some talk about him getting a police escort, which would be… ironic.

Mail Sport has spoken to police and can confirm that Scheffler has now been released from custody and is returning to Valhalla.

He is expected to arrive at the course in the next 10 minutes, and is due to tee off at 10:08am ET.

Scottie Scheffler, the best golfer in the world, was this morning arrested on the following charges:

– Second-degree assault of a police officer

– Third-degree criminal mischief

– Disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic
