The life of the Prime Minister of Slovakia is not in danger, but his condition is serious

The condition of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who received gunshot wounds as a result of an assassination attempt on May 15 in the city of Gandlova, remains serious but stable. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Robert Kaliniak.

According to Kalinyak, Fico’s life is not in danger. However, transporting the prime minister from the hospital in Banska Bystrica to Bratislava is not yet possible. In addition, according to doctors, Fico will need a lot of time for rehabilitation.

Kalinyak emphasizedthat during the prime minister’s recovery period, Slovakia should continue to function normally.

71-year-old writer and political activist Juraj Tsintula was arrested in connection with the assassination attempt on Fico. On May 15, he was among a small group of residents whom Fico came out to greet after a government meeting. In total, the attacker fired five shots at close range. Three bullets hit the prime minister.

Tsintula explained his motives by disagreement with government policy. The Slovak Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the writer, among other things, did not agree with the suspension of military assistance to Ukraine.

Tsintula admitted guilt. He faces 25 years to life in prison.

  • Fico is considered a controversial politician both within the country and abroad, including in the European Union, due to his calls to stop military aid to Ukraine and refrain from sanctions against Russia. At the same time, statements condemning the attempt on his life and wishing him a speedy recovery came from everywhere.
