Super Bowl winner Thomas Morstead cut by New York Jets in shock move: ‘Disappointed by how it went down’

Thomas Morstead has revealed his disappointment after being cut by the New York Jets in a brutal phone call at the end of his second season back with the team.
The 39-year-old punter, who won the Super Bowl in his memorable 12-year stint with the New Orleans Saints, broke the news in an Instagram video on Tuesday.
Morstead admitted he is ‘disappointed by how it went down’ after being informed over the phone that he no longer has a future with the Jets, whom he rejoined in 2023 after a previous stint in 2021.
‘Just had a call from the Jets that they’re moving on from me,’ he said while on the field at Yulman Stadium in New Orleans.
‘I just wanted to say thank you to all the fans, all the coaches that I worked with over the past few years, all the teammates. It’s been awesome, I’ve had a great experience.
‘Disappointed to be moving on and disappointed how it went down, but it’s just the way it goes in this business.

‘I really appreciate everybody that’s been a part of the journey.’
Morstead began his NFL career with the Saints after being selected out of Southern Methodist University with the 164th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
Over the course of his 12-year spell in New Orleans, he appeared in 190 career regular season games, ranked fourth in team record books and punted 692 times for a total of 32,190 yards for a 46.5 gross punting average and a 41.6 net.
The Texas-born punter served as their primary kickoff specialist from 2009-14, including when he won the Super Bowl as a rookie in the very first of those seasons.
After being released by the Saints he spent one year with the Jets, before heading back to New York after brief spells with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins.
The Jets wrote on social media after confirming Morstead has been cut: ‘Thank you for everything you’ve done in the Green & White, @thomasmorstead’.
He registered 48.2 yards per punt in 34 games with 55 boots that landed inside the 20 over the past two seasons with the Jets.

Both of those campaigns proved highly unsuccessful for the team as they missed out on a place in the postseason with losing records on each occasion.
It is unclear whether Morstead will opt to look for a new team and play on next season or hang up his cleats at the age of 39.
The Saints icon has a career 960 punts and 44,944 yards for an average of 46.8 yards in 255 games.
The Jets, meanwhile, are undergoing a major revamp under new head coach Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey after also releasing four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
