Astronomer fallout from Coldplay ‘kiss cam’

“An influential leader and fearless change-agent, I lead by example and win trust with employees of all levels, from CEOs to managers to assistants.”

In a LinkedIn post announcing her move to Astronomer last year, Cabot wrote: “I have been energised in my conversations with Andy Byron and the Astronomer leadership team about the opportunities that exist here, including aiding our employees’ career development.”

“I prefer to think of my role as people strategy versus traditional human resources, as the real magic happens when you align the people strategy with the business strategy,” Cabot continued.

Parody statements purporting to be from Byron have also been populating social media, with Astronomer co-founder Ry Walker issuing a statement on X (formerly Twitter) confirming one, although “funny”, was “not real”.

“For those asking – I’m no longer involved in [Astronomer] – yes I was co-founder and early CEO – not on the team or board since 2022, and have no information on ColdplayGate,” wrote Walker, who also said Martin is an “amazing vocalist” despite none of his 704 liked songs on Spotify being by Coldplay.

A second statement was confirmed as false by Astronomer’s director of communications Taylor Jones, who told Men’s Journal that the parody apology was “not a real statement”. At the time of publishing, it is understood that no official statements from Astronomer, Byron or Cabot have been released.

Astronomer is a private company with no share listing, though in May, it announced it had raised $US93 million ($143 million) in Series D funding, led by Bain Capital Ventures. In a release, the company said it would use the money to “expedite research and development, and to strategically expand the company’s international presence.”

“While this is just one step in Astronomer’s journey to build a durable, lasting software company, we’re thrilled to have one of our earliest investors, Bain, leading the round,” Byron said at the time, per Astronomer’s release.

“All of our investors are committed to Astronomer’s long-term vision because of our recent momentum, the massive market demand for the platform we’re building, and the macro tailwinds that support our vision. Whether it’s getting enterprise AI into production at scale, maximising data platform value through cost optimisation, or just driving more value from data in general – everything we do at Astronomer is at the heart of boardroom conversations across the world.”

No valuation was announced at the time, though Newsweek reported Astronomer achieved “unicorn” status and was valued at more $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) in 2022. In 2023, Byron was appointed chief executive of the data orchestration software start-up, which was founded in 2018 and is headquartered in New York City. Foxborough is roughly four hours away from the Big Apple by car.
