New Orleans Saints waive quarterback in stunning move as wait goes on for team to name their starter

While the wait goes on for Kellen Moore to pick his starting New Orleans Saints quarterback, one man who won’t be contending for the job is Jake Haener.
Moore and the Saints waived Haener on Tuesday ahead of the 4pm ET deadline in the NFL for teams to cut their rosters down to 53 players.
After Derek Carr retired this year due to persistant shoulder issues, new head coach Moore has a decision to make between now ony two players in Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough.
It will be a pivotal call by Moore, who himself entering his first season as a head coach.
Last year, he was the offensive coorrdinator who helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.
Speaking at the weekend, Moore seemed patient over the call and said he planned to rewatch the team’s preseason games for further guidance.
‘We’ll go through this process,’ Moore said after the team lost 29-18 to the Denver Broncos on Saturday. ‘We’ll study the film Sunday, we’ll have those discussions.
‘And then at some point next week we’ll make that decision and communicate with certainly the players, first and foremost, and we’ll get it to everyone else as well.’
As it stands, Rattler is the favorite but with only two quarterbacks on the roster, Shough will still have a vital role to play if he is indeed starting the season as the backup.
The Saints begin their 2025 campaign on September 7 against Arizona Cardinals.
