Miley Cryus Says Her New Song Is A ‘Peace Offering’ To Billy Ray After Years-Long Feud

Miley Cyrus has heartwarmingly devoted a new song to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, long after their feud, estrangement and reconciliation tragically altered my perception of Hannah Montana.

ICYMI, the father-daughter duo were at the centre of rift rumours for pretty much the entirety of last year, though no exact source of the animosity was ever pinpointed.
There was speculation the feud began in the wake of Billy’s divorce from Miley’s mother, Tish Cyrus, back in 2022, with the subsequent legal antics involving brother Trace doing little to quell reports of a familial war.

In between, Billy’s headline-making romance with Elizabeth Hurley reportedly caught the ire of Miley after she vaguely addressed the “challenges” with her father on social media, but it all appeared to be water under the bridge by June of this year.
“There’s been enough bridges now of time to get us all reconnected,” Miley said at the time while confirming her reconciliation with Billy during a podcast interview.
Now, as a welcome slice of extra closure, Miley has offered a musical olive branch in the form of “Secrets”, a new song featured on the deluxe edition of her most recent album, Something Beautiful.
While the title might suggest an airing of dirty laundry, Miley explained in an Instagram post announcing the song that “Secrets” was “written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved”.
“In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same,” the pop star added.

Just so there wasn’t any confusion as to who she was referring to in the track (ahem, Liam Hemsworth, ahem), Miley confirmed “this song is for my dad” — so excuse me while I rewatch that “Butterfly Fly Away” scene while sobbing.
In the lyrics for “Secrets”, Miley sings about “call[ing] off your forces” and a “white flag”, which my recollection of Year 10 English tells me is a message about surrendering to peace after the father-daughter war.
As if all that wasn’t wholesome enough (seriously, I can now rewatch Hannah Montana in peace), Billy responded to the song with an equally heartwarming message alongside a montage of he and Miley that has my inner child squealing.
“Thank you [Miley] for ‘Secrets’ … a song straight from your heart to mine,” Billy wrote.
“The memories we’ve made together mean the world to me, and seeing you soar with your music makes me prouder every single day,” he added.

Footage of the pair duetting, snippets from Hannah Montana, and archived pics of young Miley featured in Billy’s accompanying video, forcing me to claim there’s just something in my eye… I swear.
The track seems to have bookended years of in-fighting, and the (Saturday) Disney kid in me hopes that a duet by the pair will soon follow. Perhaps a “Butterfly Fly Away” reprise?
