Kansas City Chiefs on the brink of huge Arrowhead announcement that could change the future of the franchise

Kansas City Chiefs might just be days away from announcing that they are leaving Arrowhead Stadium.

The future home of the franchise has been under debate for months with the Chiefs contemplating a move across state lines from Missouri to Kansas, where they’d play in a newly-built domed stadium that could host Super Bowls.

Multiple reports emerged late Thursday into Friday that a meeting is scheduled for Monday where the Chiefs will confirm the move.

It was first claimed by Soren Petro, a local radio host in Kansas City. He wrote on X: ‘There is a meeting scheduled in Topeka on Monday. I’m being told the Chiefs are scheduled to be at that meeting, however the Royals are not.

‘Barring a last minute “screw up by someone at the top” announcing the Chiefs are moving to Kansas will happen after that meeting.’

Arrowhead Stadium is next door to the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium ballpark but according to Petro, they won’t be neighbors for too much longer.

The Kansas Department of Commerce then fanned the flames further, posting on Facebook: ‘The state of Kansas is in active discussions with the Kansas City Chiefs about the prospects of building a new stadium and other facilities in Kansas.

‘No final agreement has been reached, but this would be a massive economic win for Kansas and benefit Kansans for generations to come. We are aggressively pursuing this opportunity.’

Should the move be confirmed, the Chiefs will likely remain at Arrowhead through 2030, as their lease ends in 2031.

It is believed a new state-of-the-art stadium for the Chiefs would cost in the region of $3billion, while renovating Arrowhead was estimated to cost $1billion. And as exciting as swanky new home might be, leaving Arrowhead would be a sad move for many Chiefs fans.

The stadium is considered as one of the best in the NFL and has been a home for the Chiefs’ emergence as one of the dominant teams in football across the last 10 years.

In that decade, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led the team to three Super Bowl titles in five appearances.

But January and February, when the Super Bowl is held, are the coldest months in Missouri. A domed stadium would make the opportunity of hosting football’s showpiece event far more possible.

Arrowhead is also the venue where Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift first went public with their relationship when, in September 2023, the singer joined Kelce’s mom in a VIP suite to cheer him on against Chicago Bears.

This year, however, has been difficult for the franchise and their 6-8 record has already eliminated them from the postseason.

Mahomes tore his ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers while, as it stands, the expectation is that Kelce will retire when the 2025 season ends.
