Cold weather payments for benefit recipients in hundreds of postcodes – is yours on the list?
Cold weather payments have been triggered across hundreds of postcodes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as temperatures plunged across Britain.
People on benefits may be in line for an automatically paid cold weather payment as freezing conditions and snow grip the nation.
Certain households are entitled to the cash when there is a prolonged spell of below-zero temperatures.
Households on certain benefits, like universal credit, pension credit, support for mortgage interest or employment and support allowance can be eligible for the payout.
In Scotland, those on low incomes and benefits may receive a separate winter heating payment, which does not depend on how cold it gets.

What is a cold weather payment?
The cold weather payment is a government benefit top-up aimed at helping people with their energy bills.
The average temperature in a local area must be recorded as, or forecast to be, 0C or below for seven days in a row.
Temperatures are recorded by the weather station nearest to your postcode.
More than 1.4million cold weather payments worth £35million dished out during winter 2024-25.
Who can get the payments?
Only households on certain benefits can get the cold weather payment.
People may be eligible if they receive universal credit, pension credit, income support, income-based jobseeker’s allowance, employment and support allowance or support for mortgage interest.
For those on universal credit, you may be eligible for the payment if you are not employed or ‘gainfully self-employed.’
Those who are not receiving pension credit will typically need to have a health condition, caring responsibilities, or young or disabled children to be eligible.

You must live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland to qualify for the payment.
How much can you get?
Each cold weather payment is for a seven-day period and is worth £25.
More than one payment will be made during the course of the winter if there are enough periods of very cold weather.
After each period of very cold weather in your area, you should get a payment within 14 working days. It is paid into the same bank or building society account as any benefit payments. The payment reference will be ‘DWP CWP’.

Payments are made automatically, so there is no need to make any form of application.
Hospital stays can affect your entitlement to the cold weather payment, so you should tell the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus if you become an inpatient.
You should also update the relevant service if you have a baby, or if a child under five comes to live with you.
The cold weather payment scheme runs between 1 November and 31 March each year.
Those who believe they are eligible but have not received the payment should contact the Department for Work and Pensions.
How many people are getting cold weather payments?
On 7 January, the DWP said there were 673,000 cold weather payments made in total from 1 November to 2 January, among more than 4million eligible households.
The highest number of eligible recipients was found near the Heathrow weather station, with 644,000 households eligible, and less than 200,000 of those eligible for pension credit.
Minister for Pensions, Torsten Bell, said this week: ‘As temperatures plunge, Cold Weather Payments will automatically get support directly to vulnerable households.
‘Combined with the biggest ever Pension Credit take-up campaign and our Triple Lock commitment – set to increase the State Pension by up to £2,100 over this Parliament – we’re ensuring pensioners get the support they need this Winter.’
