Princess Isabella’s unexpected ‘Aussie’ move at graduation – before she partied with the rap group behind her 2025 ‘X-rated’ T-shirt scandal

Princess Isabella of Denmark may be preparing to swap royal engagements for military life, but the newly graduated 19-year-old has already made it clear she intends to enjoy her final summer of freedom.

The daughter of Queen Mary and King Frederik X has spent the days since finishing high school celebrating with friends, riding through the streets on a truck and, in an unexpected turn, partying with the same rap group behind her 2025 T-shirt scandal.

But amid the graduation caps, family celebrations, and late-night festivities, royal fans may have missed another surprising detail.

For her official graduation ceremony at Oeregaard Gymnasium in Hellerup, Isabella wore a fitted red top with a flowing white midi skirt, creating an elegant tribute to the colours of the Danish flag.

Yet her skirt did not come from a Danish designer or one of the European luxury houses regularly worn by members of the royal family.

Instead, the young princess turned to Australian Gen Z go-to Meshki, wearing the brand’s Selma Curved Waist Midi Skirt in white.

The piece, which retails for $129 in Australia and is currently on sale for $103, features a contemporary curved waistline and sleek column silhouette.

It’s likely a subtle nod to Isabella’s Australian-born mother, who wore a denim skirt by Aussie designer Zimmermann on the day.

It is also another sign that Isabella is developing a more relaxed and distinctly modern royal wardrobe of her own.

The teenager’s fashion has often been compared to that of her famously stylish mother, and she has regularly borrowed select designer pieces directly from Mary’s wardrobe.

However, Isabella has increasingly shown that she is willing to experiment outside the traditional royal fashion playbook.

That was made spectacularly clear last August, when the then-18-year-old caused an international stir after attending the Danish music festival Smukfest in a black T-shirt emblazoned with a highly suggestive slogan.

Written in Danish, the words translated to ‘f***ed him yesterday’, with an arrow pointing off to the side.

The top was merchandise for Danish hip hop group Suspekt, who were performing at the festival and are renowned for their explicit and sexually charged lyrics.

The outfit marked an enormous style departure for the teenage princess, who was normally seen in public looking demure, polished, and regal.

Danish political commentator Jarl Cordua was among the most vocal critics, arguing that Isabella’s royal position came with certain expectations.

‘I’m also in favour of the royals letting loose a little. They always have. They should definitely be allowed to. BUT. There are limits,’ he wrote at the time.

‘We’ll probably live with that shirt, but I wouldn’t recommend making it a habit. Being royal is an obligation. And it’s probably time for someone to tell her that.’

Long-time royalist and Danish TV presenter Jim Lyngvild told media outlet BT that he, too, was initially shocked by Isabella’s outfit.

‘At first I was taken aback by that: “Oh, you can’t do that”,’ he said.

But after giving it further consideration, the presenter said that he changed his mind and in fact felt it was ‘brilliant’.

‘It’s the best PR initiative for the Royal House in many, many years,’ Lyngvild said.

‘The time of the ladies in the hat is over, Princess Isabella is in. I expect a lot from her… I LOVE that our royal youngsters also have personality and courage – and don’t follow the neat pleated flow.

‘There are no other princesses in the world who would dare to do that.’

Now, almost a year after the controversy, it appears Isabella’s enthusiasm for Suspekt has not faded.

According to Danish outlet BT, the princess was recently seen celebrating her graduation at another performance by the group – and this time, several senior members of the royal family were apparently along for the party.

Videos circulating on TikTok reportedly showed Isabella, wearing a white floral dress and her graduation cap, jumping on stage with a friend alongside the members of Suspekt during what appeared to be part of the graduation celebrations.

King Frederik was also reportedly seen enjoying the concert from the front row alongside his daughter.

Suspekt frontman Orgi-E even appeared to hand the microphone to the King, who could be seen rapping along.

Crown Prince Christian was also reportedly among the revellers, while Queen Mary appeared to take a slightly more restrained approach to the festivities.

The Australian-born Queen was seen standing further back near the water’s edge behind DJ Rune Rask, although she still appeared to be grooving along to the music.

The family’s apparent embrace of the group is particularly amusing given the international uproar that followed Isabella’s Suspekt merchandise less than a year ago.

At the time, Mary herself eventually weighed in on her daughter’s outfit choice.

During a visit to Samsø in August, the Queen was asked directly what she thought of the T-shirt.

‘My first thought was – is she completely gone?’ Mary replied, laughing.

‘But let’s put it this way… some decisions are better than others.’

The response delighted royal fans, who praised Mary for acknowledging the controversy without publicly humiliating her teenage daughter.

Her latest celebrations came after an emotional week for the Danish royal family.

Isabella received her white graduation cap on June 23 after completing three years at Oeregaard Gymnasium, with her parents and siblings Crown Prince Christian, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine joining her for the milestone.

Pictures from the ceremony showed the princess hugging friends and family as her parents watched proudly.

Speaking to reporters outside the school, Isabella said she was ‘super happy and proud’ of herself.

‘I’ve used the three years [at Oeregaard] extremely well, and I’m extremely happy with how it’s gone up until the exam. I’m just super happy and proud of myself,’ she said.

Asked how she planned to spend the months ahead, Isabella made it clear she intended to make the most of her summer.

‘Well, I’m going to spend the whole beginning of my summer at least giving it my all, with all my future and current companions, so I’m really looking forward to that,’ she said.

‘And then I’m just going to be with my family, and enjoy [the time off] until I have to [start my military training].’

The princess has since joined her classmates for the traditional Danish ‘student truck ride’, travelling aboard a decorated vehicle while wearing a purple sleeveless top, jeans and her graduation cap.

Her summer break will be relatively short-lived.

In August, Isabella is due to begin 11 months of military training at the Guard Hussar Regiment, following in the footsteps of her older brother Crown Prince Christian.

The move will place her among the first cohort of young Danish women to undertake the country’s newly expanded military service programme.

Isabella said she hoped the experience would push her beyond what she had already learned at school.

‘I just think it could be fun to challenge myself to the limit. But it’s going to be super exciting and good for me anyway.’

For now, however, the princess appears to be making good on her promise to enjoy the summer – with a graduation cap on her head, an Australian label in her wardrobe and, once again, Suspekt providing the soundtrack.
