Disgraced Chicago hospital executive left glam wife and mansion to flee to SERBIA after he was accused of $15m scam

A disgraced Chicago hospital executive who fled to Serbia after being accused of fraud could soon be extradited to the United States.

Dr Anosh Ahmed, 42, is facing fraud and embezzlement charges in two separate federal indictments, according to federal court records reviewed by the Daily Mail.

He is accused of embezzling $15 million from former employer, Loretto Hospital, between December 2017 and March 2021, one indictment alleged.

He was serving as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of the taxpayer-funded hospital at the time of the alleged crime. 

The physician was also charged with defrauding the US government of about $300 million in a separate COVID-19 testing scheme, the second indictment said.

Ahmed fled the US in 2023 and was considered a fugitive. He was arrested in Belgrade on November 30 last year and has remained behind bars ever since.

The former hospital executive had been fighting extradition to the US, but his lawyer has now told the judge that Ahmed no longer contests the process, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The move appears to be part of a bid to have the charges in his COVID testing case dismissed.

Ahmed was charged in that case alongside his associates Mahmood Sami Khan and Suhaib Ahmad Chaudhry.

Prosecutors allege he and his co-defendants submitted approximately $894 million in false testing claims to the government, which resulted in roughly $300 million in fraudulent reimbursements. 

US District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman permanently dismissed the charges against Khan and Chaudhry earlier this month amid allegations of prosecutorial misconduct during grand jury proceedings.

Ahmed moved to join the motion to dismiss, but Coleman denied his request because he has ‘refused to submit’ to the jurisdiction of her court, her ruling said.

‘Ahmed’s assertion that he resides in a Serbian jail based on a tainted indictment, is unsupported, because he was arrested based on two warrants,’ Coleman wrote.

She argued that ‘he continues to fight the very extradition that would take him out of the Serbian government’s custody.’

Coleman further claimed he should not be given ‘the benefits of a justice system he is actively refusing to be prosecuted in.’

The judge did, however, say she would be willing to reconsider her ruling if Ahmed ‘submits to the court’s jurisdiction.’

Even if Coleman dismisses the charges against Ahmed, he could still be facing prosecution in the Loretto Hospital case.

The US Attorney’s office has said it plans on reindicting the defendants in that case, the Chicago Tribune reported.

But this month Ahmed’s co-defendants former Loretto CEO Dr George Miller Jr and Dr Heather Bergdahl, the hospital’s former chief transformation officer, were offered deferred prosecution agreements.

Medical supply executive Sameer Suhail, MD, is also in ‘negotiations’ for a similar deal, court records showed. 

Bergdahl, Miller, Suhail and Ahmed were accused of siphoning money from the hospital. Prosecutors allege that they made requests for hospital payments to vendors for goods and services never provided. 

They then directed the money through a computerized system to accounts they controlled, the indictment alleged. 

Ahmed and Suhail were both living in Dubai when the charges came down in the Loretto case. 

Suhail returned to the US this year and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Ahmed, originally from Houston, resigned from his role at Loretto in 2021 amid fallout over his alleged involvement in the COVID-19 vaccines scheme. 

His resignation came after it was revealed that he had offered early vaccines to 72 employees at Trump Tower in Chicago, where he owned a $2.7 million condo.

Ahmed had previously bragged about vaccinating President Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, on the same day he vaccinated the Trump Tower workers. He later claimed that remark was a joke.

The Daily Mail contacted representatives for Eric Trump at the time, but did not receive a response to our request for comment. Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

It is unclear exactly when and how Ahmed ended up in Serbia.

The doctor and his wife Mouna Mouissat, 31, were wed at Houston City Hall on June 21, 2021, according to business documents filed with the French government.

Mouissat, a French national, opened two real estate companies in the European country in 2023, French public records show. 

She listed herself, Ahmed and their now four-year-old son as partners at both firms, which are operated out of a home in the small southwestern town of Boucau.

Boucau is roughly three miles from her birthplace of Bayonne. It is unclear if Mouissat is actively living in France or if the address associated with her businesses is a family residence.

Ahmed and Mouissat have also been linked to two massive properties in Houston, including a $4.6 million 10,050sq ft mansion.

The couple were granted an occupancy permit for the address in 2021, notes from a City Council of Hunters Creek Village meeting revealed. 

The property was transferred from Ahmed’s name to a Chicago-based holding company in 2023, according to Harris Central Appraisal District (HCAD) records.

The residence was then transferred to an unnamed private owner who is associated with a $1.7 million home located just 11 miles away, HCAD records showed.

While it is unclear who specifically owns either property, public records show that Suhail is one of several residents currently listed at the $4.6 million mansion.

A current address for Mouissat was not publicly available.

Attorneys for Ahmed, Bergdahl, Miller and Suhail did not respond to the Daily Mail’s requests for comment.
