Trump unleashes early morning ‘weaponization’ rant against Todd Blanche holdout: ‘Shocking and disgusting’

President Donald Trump unleashed a tirade against one of the Republican senators who blocked a vote on Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s nomination to formally lead the Department of Justice, writing that the $1.776 billion “weaponization” fund that has driven opposition to his nominee among GOP holdouts should move forward.

In a fiery and lengthy Friday morning post on Truth Social, Trump called out Texas Republican John Cornyn, one of the two GOP senators who’ve thus far blocked Blanche’s nomination from receiving a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. He claimed Cornyn “never had a problem” with the plan to compensate convicted criminals — including Jan. rioters — who were prosecuted under Democrats until after he’d opposed the Texan in this year’s GOP primary.

“John Cornyn never had a problem with the so called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas, who easily won the Nomination for the United States Senate,” he said.

Continuing, the president claimed the thousands of convicts — some of whom assaulted police or committed other acts of violence during the riot he fomented at the U.S. Capitol in January 2021 — had been treated worse than any other group in U.S. history and were “suffering still” despite his decision to pardon them on his first day back in power.

“They are suffering still, many ruined, and I felt that they should be given compensation for what has been done to them,” he said. “I will always feel that these victims of government abuse should be paid back for what they were forced to endure, their lives have been ruined!”

Trump added that “millions of people” — including Cornyn — had agreed with him and accused the Texas senator of changing his mind out of spite over his primary loss to a Trump-backed challenger while demanding that Blanche be “immediately approved.”

The president’s latest tirade in support of Blanche comes less than a day after he said he’d consider pulling his former criminal defense attorney’s nomination rather than concede to Cornyn and North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, both of whom have demanded written assurances from Blanche that the “weaponization”fund – to compensate people for political prosecutions – plan will not be carried out in any form.

Despite his increasingly shrill calls for Cornyn andTillis to drop their opposition to Blanche, it’s unlikely that either will budge in light of Trump’s assertion that he still wants the “weaponization” fund to move forward, as it directly contradicts Blanche’s sworn testimony from his confirmation hearing in which he called the plan “dead.”

Both GOP holdouts have also objected to Blanche’s purported immunization of Trump and his family and businesses from any IRS audit or investigation.

On Thursday, Trump called his ex-criminal defense attorney a “star” who “has the potential to go down as one of the Greatest Attorney Generals of All Time”and vowed to keep Blanche in place as acting attorney general regardless of what the Senate does with his nomination.

“I have no objection to temporarily withdrawing Todd’s name, if they do not do the right thing, and putting him back after Cornyn and Tillis are out of office,” he said.

But Cornyn later posted to X that opposition to Blanche on account of the IRS deal he struck with Trump could be deeper than just he and his Tar Heel State colleague.

“POTUS is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis,” he said.
