Scientists and doctors have warned about the dangers – both for the body and the environment – of the microplastics that plastic scourers shed. Seep’s eco sponges are microplastics-free and the claim is they do an even better job than your traditional kitchen sponge. Founded by Laura Harnett in 2020, the brand was featured on Dragons’ Den last year, and both Deborah Meaden and Trinny Woodall invested.
What’s the promise?
Marketed as longer lasting and tougher on mess, the soft side is made from wool-pulp cellulose. They are safe for nonstick pans, and can be popped in the dishwasher.
What’s the science?
Friction from scrubbing with a traditional sponge can shed microplastics, infiltrating everything from our water supplies to the tissue inside our bodies. Philip Landrigan, director of the Program for Global Public Health at Boston College, says, ‘Eventually those microplastics get back into bodies and harm health.’
What’s the verdict?
I can confirm these are just as effective as their plastic alternatives. They may be more expensive, but the scientific and environmental benefits persuade me they are worth it. And while traditional kitchen sponges can last from one to two weeks, Seep’s sponges can last four to eight weeks, with the option to compost afterwards.
