Friday Racing Tips: Best Bets For Newmarket on Friday

It’s day two of a big week of action on Newmarket’s Rowley Course, and our Friday racing tips feature four selections for the second day of this year’s Cambridgeshire Meeting.

You wouldn’t say this is the strongest Listed contest staged at HQ this season, with some patchy form among the leading players, albeit it good form on its day.

Favourites have a poor recent record in this, with only one obliging in the past decade, while there aren’t any huge trainer pointers either, just William Haggas and the Gosdens having won it twice each in that period.

I think the way to play this could be to go in each-way on betting sites at a price with LIZZANA. Marco Botti’s filly is 16/1 as I write and she has the sort of form on her CV that would make her very competitive, if she can reproduce it.

Her last two starts have been in an Italian Group 3 (1m, good), when she was a close second at San Siro in May, followed more recently by being under 4L third in the Italian Oaks (1m2½f, good), a Group 2 event at the same track.

She’s been given time since then and now back in Britain, this is probably a good level to try here. She’s won two AW novice events here, the second under a penalty. Her latest effort was her best yet, so there is scope for further improvement and she might have been overlooked by the layers.

Friday racing tip 1: Lizzana – 1pt each-way @ 16/1 (Ladbrokes)

Inis Mor is clearly the best runner in this field on her form to date. She’s been dining at the top table and is a classy sort who is 4lb clear of the next best in the field on official ratings. If you strongly fancy her, I would definitely not put you off getting involved on horse racing betting sites, as she’ll take a bit of beating.

Prizeland is the next best runner on paper, and this ought to be fought out between the pair of them, but there’s a very interesting runner here with the potential to take a good step forward in WITHOUT PREJUDICE.

Trained by the Gosdens, she cost 125,000 Guineas as a foal and 240,000 as a yearling and she’s a half-sister to the stable’s former Group 1 Coronation Cup winner Emily Upjohn. She was clearly a bit of a late developer, as they didn’t give her a debut until July 31st and she duly obliged with a decisive win on Newmarket’s July Course (1m2f, good to firm) by more than 4L.

She was then taken out of the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes (1m4f) at York, Ebor Festival on account of the ground, described as good to soft, before she headed to Windsor and didn’t need to be as good as her debut effort to win comfortably at prohibitive odds.

The yard clearly thinks a fair bit of her to pitch her into this grade and she looks to have each-way potential at 7/1 and who’s to say this totally unexposed filly can’t improve sufficiently to win it.

Friday racing tip 2: Without Prejudice – 1pt each-way @ 7/1 (William Hill)

Spirited Gesture has looked very useful in winning on debut on the July Course (7f, good to firm) and then following up under a penalty by 3L at Newcastle (7f, AW). The May Hill had been mentioned by John Gosden after that debut success but, instead, she steps up into pattern company with this Group 2 contest.

Gosden senior has suggested she’ll need some cut in the ground, although if she’s already won when it’s quick she shouldn’t mind a genuine good surface, as forecast. She still fits the ‘could be anything’ bill but she’s plenty short enough given that she takes on LIGHT OF DAWN, who looks to have a little bit of value in her price on betting apps.

Yes, I accept she’s a little more exposed after four starts but she comes from a very good family that’s already produced ten other winners and she’s already won in Group 3 company at Glorious Goodwood.

The form of that Prestige Stakes win is the pick going into this and, as it was her first try over 7f, there should also be more to come from her in this. She certainly appears to have pilot James Doyle excited, reading what he’s had to say about her and she’s twice the price of the favourite.

Friday racing tip 3: Light Of Dawn – 1pt win @ 4/1 (Bet365)

Talk Of New York will be all the rage here and I remember writing about him in my weekly newsletter after he trounced his field in a Sandown Listed event in May (1m, good). He bettered that when less than 2L third behind the brilliant Bow Echo in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and it’s no surprise that he’s been trading at odds-on since the market opened.

However, my each-way alternative here is PERSICA. Yes, she’s exposed but she’s the obvious one if you’re attempting to take on the market leader. She’s won several Group 3 events, she goes on any ground and if they happen to go quickly, we know she gets 1m2f, so she’ll be sticking on well at the business end.

If the favourite has an off day she’ll be waiting to take advantage and it wouldn’t surprise me if James Doyle rides her from the front, to take the sting out of the favourite. I think she represents the value in the contest.
