Pat McAfee’s first Monday Night Football alt-cast flops… as fears of audience fatigue grow around ESPN’s biggest star

Pat McAfee’s debut Monday Night Football alt-cast failed to live up to expectations after viewership numbers indicated a potential ‘fatigue’ around ESPN’s biggest star.

McAfee hosted his first ‘Field Pass’ alt-cast during the San Francisco 49ers’ 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders, drawing in just 351,000 viewers on ESPN2.

It’s a number far lower than ESPN executives would have hoped for and reports even claimed that it was around half what the Manning brothers received in their alt-casts.

Those reports indicated that ManningCast drew in over 700,000 viewers in their Week 1 broadcast, before watching viewing figures drop to 661,000 the following week.

Meanwhile, elsewhere on Monday night, the NFL Network’s ‘Next Gen Stats’ alt-cast even managed to draw in around 469,000 viewers, according to reports.

Fans quickly rushed to social media to weigh in on McAfee’s alt-cast performance, suggesting that perhaps America has grown tired of the former NFL punter.

Taking to X, one fan responded to a report on the viewing figures, writing: ‘America has McAfee fatigue. His employer just hasn’t figured it out. Yikes’.

Similarly, another fan wrote: ‘Omg Disney have u [sic] ever heard of ‘fatigue’? As in saying most of the sports world has ‘Pat McAfee fatigue’.’

Another user on X added: ‘People are f***ing tired of this guy. Just like ESPN to oversaturate the network with him.’

‘I like Pat in small portions. He also felt way more genuine before. Now, he’s in literally EVERYTHING and feels like he’s loud just for the sake of it.’

In total, the Commanders-49ers clash drew 17.9 million viewers across ESPN, ABC, ESPN2 – including ‘Field Pass’ – and the NFL Network.

ESPN chiefs will be hopeful that they soon see an upward trend in McAfee’s alt-cast numbers, given they have added it to their slate of Super Bowl LXI broadcasts.

Meanwhile, the suggestions about potential ‘fatigue’ come just one week after an ESPN executive gushed over McAfee amid ongoing negotiations over a huge new contract that could see him earn more than $60 million with the network.

His current deal is worth around $30 million per year between his Pat McAfee Show production agreement and his role on ESPN College GameDay, as well as appearing on numerous other shows including expanding to ‘Monday Night Countdown.’

ESPN’s Executive Vice President and Executive Editor for Sports News and Entertainment Mike Foss, who oversees McAfee’s daily show, lifted the lid on what the network sees in McAfee, having decided to back him in an increasingly big way.

Asked one word to describe McAfee while appearing at the Front Office Sports’s Tuned In summit, Foss went for ‘generational’ and bluntly said he has ‘absolutely nothing’ to say to critics of his College GameDay antics.

In high praise of McAfee, Foss said: ‘He is, he might be, a journalist at heart. I think what you find is he puts the show together each day, something piques his interest, he’s got the rolodex, so he’s able to navigate waters and has built access that a lot of people don’t have the ability to do.

‘So when he needs to get information, whether he’s on the show or off, he’s able to grab it very quickly.

‘I think he’s underrated as an interview, I think it’s also very interesting, he’s almost like a Rorschach test, in terms of what he is.

‘He’s not just a talent, he’s a producer, he’s an interview, he’s an actor. So I find it fascinating to see what other people’s definitions are of him, because I actually think it says more about them than him.’
