Chelsea 0-2 Spurs PLAYER RATINGS: Which Blues star endured a nightmare outing? Who was an ‘absolute nuisance’ for the visitors? And how did Cole Palmer rate after red card?

Tottenham beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for only the second time in 41 attempts on an evening to remember for Roberto De Zerbi’s men.

A dreadful error from Blues goalkeeper Mike Penders gave Spurs the lead 13 minutes from time as he punched a corner into his own net.

It went from bad to worse for Chelsea shortly after as Cole Palmer was sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession.

Mathys Tel then sealed the three points for Spurs as he beat Penders from distance to cap a perfect outing for the visitors and leave Xabi Alonso with questions to answer.

Daily Mail Sport’s KIERAN GILL and BOBBY MANZI were there to run the rule over both sides.

CHELSEA (3-4-2-1)

Mike Penders – 3

Is there a worse way to mark your full debut in the Premier League than this? He tried to punch clear a Tottenham corner, but only sent the ball backwards for an own goal. He was then beaten from 20 yards by Mathys Tel to cap an unfortunate afternoon for the 21-year-old understudy.

Josh Acheampong – 5

Tottenham seemed to target this 20-year-old academy graduate’s side, especially in the first half. Acheampong had his hands full with Tel, who got away from him to score Spurs’ second, while James Maddison was also drifting into his area.

Maxence Lacroix – 5

Performed an acrobatic clearance in a bid to try to save Penders from his humiliation, but the ball had crossed the line. Among those Chelsea players who took turns fouling Maddison before he exited injured.

Levi Colwill – 5

Had an easier time of it defending-wise than Acheampong. Super ball in behind from deep nearly left Pedro Neto one-on-one. But this was a substandard afternoon for all those associated with Chelsea.

Pedro Neto – 6

Wing back. Winger. Call him what you want. Neto works hard. Tel tried to buy a penalty out of him, but he won the ball fairly. Tested Antonin Kinsky several times – just couldn’t score.

Moises Caicedo – 5

If you were in his way, he’d barge into you, as Maddison discovered here on the odd occasion. Maddison was allowed too much space throughout. Captained Chelsea to a derby defeat.

Jordan Henderson – 5

Almost scored in what was his fourth successive start in the Premier League. Kinsky managed to stop his 18-yard crack after some – rare – nice one-touch football from Chelsea.

Jorrel Hato – 5

When Spurs had the ball – as they often did – he was expected to be a left back. When Chelsea had it, he was supposed to get forward to help the attack.

Cole Palmer – 3

He flirted with a second yellow last week at Everton and got away with it then. But he did not here. He earned his two bookings. He barged into Mateus Fernandes to be cautioned for dissent after 71 minutes. Then stood on Conor Gallagher’s foot after 80. Both were acts of idiocy from Palmer.

Geovany Quenda – 5

First start for Chelsea, replacing the injured Joao Pedro, but hardly contributed to the attack. Tried swapping wings with Neto for a while. Huge roar for Estevao when the Brazilian replaced him.

Morgan Rogers – 5

Chelsea missed the hold-up play of a striker. Rogers largely filled in as a false nine, though the set-up was rather fluid as players moved around positions. Showed his frustration towards the end when he was on the pitch without his mates, the red-carded Palmer and the injured Joao Pedro.

SUBS USED

Marco Palestra (for Hato, 65 minutes) – 5

Came on at 0-0. Chelsea lost 2-0. But hardly his fault. The Blues were not competitive enough throughout this match and Spurs left saying they outplayed their opponents.

Estevao (for Quenda, 73 minutes) – 5

You do not hear many roars this loud for a substitution as Estevao was introduced before the 80th minute for the first time this season. But he could not deliver that big moment.

Danny Welbeck (for Neto, 88 minutes) – N/A

MANAGER

Xabi Alonso – 4

This was not a performance worthy of Chelsea when Tottenham come to town. They are supposed to try to take control, but they were weak here, and deserved to lose.

TOTTENHAM

Antonin Kinsky – 7

Slightly questionable with his feet but brilliant otherwise. Made a fantastic save to deny Palmer, tipping over the bar. A few good stops from Neto chances, too.

Archie Gray – 6

Played both left-back and right-back, neither fazed him. Managed Palmer and Quenda well. Didn’t offer bundles going forward, though.

Jan Paul van Hecke – 7

Pressured Penders into a mistake as he punched into his own net, giving Spurs their first win at Stamford Bridge in eight years. Spurs fans won’t care how it was scored, van Hecke will go down as their hero. Was a rock at the back.

Micky van de Ven – 7

Strong. A misfiring Chelsea front line could not get past him. Formed a fine partnership with his compatriot at centre-back.

Andy Robertson – 6

Combined well with Tel, particularly in the first half. Played an exquisite cross into Marmoush’s feet and was robbed of an assist by poor finishing.

Mateus Fernandes – 7

Was up for it and pivotal to Spurs’ midfield control. Expertly broke up play and acted as the anchor between defence and attack. Solid.

Sandro Tonali – 7

Covered the most ground of any player. Offered a durable platform with his defensive work. Dominated midfield alongside Fernandes and that was vital.

Mohammed Kudus – 7

Missed narrowly inside the area, bending wide of the post from a tight angle. Got on the ball plenty and showed his dribbling quality.

James Maddison – 8

Ran the show on his second start of the season until he was forced off injured minutes into the second half. He just cannot stay fit.

Kept it ticking in midfield; Moises Caicedo could not get near him. Was the main creative outlet while on the field, with the most touches in the opposition box. Found Tel in space on the left with a wonderful outside-of-the-boot pass. Their link-up was effective.

Mathys Tel – 8

Absolute nuisance down the left. Chelsea could not handle him at all. Topped it off with an exceptional drilled finish from outside of the box in the dying minutes, guaranteeing a rare Spurs win over Chelsea.

Omar Marmoush – 5

Should have given Spurs the lead after he was found free in the six-yard box but hit his effort straight at Penders. Anywhere else, it was 1-0 Spurs. Disappointing.

SUBS

Conor Gallagher (51’ for Maddison) – 6

Was fouled as Cole Palmer was sent off for a second yellow card. Viscerally booed by the home fans on return to his former employers. Didn’t do much.

Dominic Solanke (65’ for Marmoush) – 5

Didn’t manage a shot in his 25-minute cameo. It was a good job those around him took the initiative.

Pedro Porro (65’ for Robertson) – 6

Active up and down the touchline. Helped keep Spurs’ energy high.

Ben Davies (89’ for Kudus) – N/A

Dejan Kulusevski (89’ for Tel) – N/A
