A Greek artistic celebration on the occasion of choosing Alexandria as the Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2025

Today, the Library of Alexandria witnessed the opening of the “Alexandria and the Mediterranean Cultural Forum: Mediterranean Links that Bring Us Together,” which is organized by the Library in cooperation with a number of local and international institutions, and will continue until October 23, 2025 at the Conference Center and the Plaza of Civilizations.
Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Library of Alexandria, Ambassador Sergio Carranza, Ambassador of Spain to Cairo, and Alessandro Giovanni, representative of the Anna Lindh Foundation, participated in the opening, along with representatives of partner agencies, while Ambassador Nasser Kamel, Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, delivered a recorded speech to the attendees.
Dr. Ahmed Zayed stressed that choosing Alexandria as the first capital of culture and dialogue in the Mediterranean reflects its historical role as a city that brings together civilizations, noting that the forum discusses three main axes linking the past, present, and future: the common Mediterranean identity, cultural dialogue, and creating the future.
For his part, Spanish Ambassador Sergio Carranza expressed his happiness at participating in his first official activity in Cairo, stressing the depth of relations between Egypt and Spain, and pointing to his country’s participation in the forum through the “Mediterranean Delta” exhibition.
In his speech, Ambassador Nasser Kamel stressed the importance of strengthening paths of dialogue and cultural exchange in facing the challenges of the Mediterranean, most notably climate change and economic and social gaps.
Representatives of partner institutions also spoke, emphasizing the importance of the cultural role of the Mediterranean in supporting mutual understanding, while Dr. Mahmoud Hassan, founder of the Alexandria International Mediterranean Food Exhibition, reviewed the importance of Mediterranean food as a common heritage and culture that goes beyond its health values.
The opening also witnessed the participation of the Greek Foundation for Book and Culture, which organized a musical event documenting the cultural history of the Greek community in Alexandria, in addition to a speech by the Ministry of Agriculture that stressed the importance of the agricultural sector in supporting sustainability and developing food industries.
