Amazon Delivers Stern Reminder To The Summer I Turned Pretty Fans Over Harsh Comments

The Summer I Turned Pretty has hordes of invested, dedicated and loyal fans. However, according to the folks at Prime Video, fans have taken the discourse surrounding Team Conrad, Team Jeremiah and Belly’s wayward teenage decisions a step too far.

Right before the streaming service dropped the eighth episode, it shared a statement across its social media pages to remind fans not to be fucking weird about the show and its actors online.
“The show isn’t real, but the people playing the characters are,” the official account wrote, alongside a graphic designed like the series’ title card reading, “The summer we started acting normal online”.
They’re sooOoOoooooo real for that.

The fitting reminder comes after the cast members — specifically Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah — started copping some pretty awful bullying from people online.
In a chat with the New York Times, Casalegno shared that as he tries to stay off Instagram, he avoids the brunt of it. However, he’s very aware that the internet has completely turned on his character this season.
“I think it’s important to also understand and realise that this is a fictional story — and it’s also not me,” he explained.
“I don’t think there’s a single human being in the world who can carry the emotional negativity to the degree that stuff like this happens. And I think that’s why Amazon did a good job of stepping in and being like, ‘Hey, no bullying.’ Though not really going so well”

It’s not the first time that Prime Video have made statements reminding viewers to be kind online. Just after season three premiered, the streaming service released a statement warning fans against harassing the actors and members of the fandom.

At the time, Amazon TV chief Vernon Sanders said that he felt the message was necessary after seeing the reactions had by fandoms in the past with other beloved book-to-television franchises.
“We’ve had similar situations in the past with adaptations, where there is a fanbase out there that I think can get rowdy, and it sometimes can blur the line between characters and actors or overstep,” he said, per Variety.
“And so we really appreciate them and appreciate their passion, but we’re trying to be more proactive about setting expectations of what we want to encourage and maybe what we find not appropriate. And I think our creators and our cast really appreciate us taking the proactive stance there.”
Look, I get it. I also have strong feelings about what I want to happen at the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty. But that doesn’t mean we should be unkind or mean.
Let’s keep the discourse light, character-based and leave the goddamn actors out of it. They’re literally just trying to do their jobs.
You can watch seasons one, two and most of season three of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime Video.
