Celtic eyeing a £5million boost from Jeremie Frimpong’s next move as Liverpool consider big-money offer for Leverkusen right-back

Celtic could be set for a windfall in excess of £5million after Liverpool stepped up their interest in signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.

Earmarked as the main target to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in the summer, Liverpool are in hot pursuit of the 24-year-old Holland international.

Frimpong was a revelation during his two seasons with Celtic, joining for a fee of around £350,000 before being sold to Leverkusen for £11.5m just 18 months later.

It is understood that Celtic had a clause in the deal with Leverkusen which would see them bank 30 per cent of the profit on any future transfer.

With Liverpool now pushing ahead with plans to meet Frimpong’s release clause of £29.5m, that would see the Germans make a profit of around £18m.

A figure of around £5.4m would then be pumped back into Celtic’s coffers for a player who left the club four years ago.

A rampaging presence at right wing-back for Leverkusen under head coach Xabi Alonso, Frimpong was a key part of the team that won the Bundesliga last season.

He has also established himself as a Dutch international, with his performances over the past couple of seasons catching the eye of Liverpool.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions need a new right-back, with Alexander-Arnold set to join Real Madrid in the summer.

Frimpong has played as a wing-back for Leverkusen and excelled in their Bundesliga triumph last season with 14 goals and 12 assists, while this season he has scored five and set up a further 12.

It is understood Leverkusen were first made aware of interest back in December 2024 and that has accelerated in the last six weeks since Alexander-Arnold told Arne Slot in March of his intention to leave.

Frimpong signed a mega-money boot deal with New Balance in January of this year with the manufacturing giant seeing him as a future face of European football.

Mail Sport reported that at the time and revealed that contract was worth around £20million, putting him in the same bracket as Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi’s deals with Nike and adidas respectively.
