Aside from being one of the biggest music festivals in the calendar, Coachella is also a fashion event for the ages.
With this year’s circuit kicking off the weekend of April 10, there are only a matter of days before celebrities and influencers descend upon Indio, California, in their finest garments once again.
Coachella has brought many an iconic ensemble since it first arrived on the scene in 1999 but not every look has hit the mark.
Some celebs have fallen victim to eccentric accessories, over-the-top ruffles and all-round festival fashion cliches.
So, ahead of this year’s two-weekend affair, here’s a look back at the outfits that didn’t quite hit the mark.
2012: Emma Roberts missed the mark with a tried-and-tested festival ensemble
Emma Roberts took the relaxed, dressed-down look a little too far as she wore her denim shorts completely unbuttoned in 2012
Emma Roberts stripped down to a tiny tube top and Daisy Dukes to party at the festival in 2012.
But, although it is a tried-and-tested ensemble for thousands of festival attendees, the actress’ attempt at recreating the outfit was subpar.
She took the relaxed, dressed-down look a little too far as she wore her denim shorts completely unbuttoned.
Roberts, 35, paired her tiny outfit with a pair of pink ankle socks and some Converse sneakers.
2013: Rita Ora actively avoided festival chic – but the alternative was equally disappointing
Rita Ora bared her midriff by combining a low-slung skirt and a bright pink bikini top peeking through a rolled-up white T-shirt at Coachella in 2013
Rita perhaps took self-expression a bit too far when she showed up in a bizarre mix-and-match outfit in 2013.
The singer, 35, bared her midriff by combining a low-slung skirt – emblazoned with giant faces – and a bright pink bikini top peeking through a rolled-up white T-shirt.
She finished off her look with a cross dangling from a dog collar style necklace and a see-through PVC jacket.
The cherry on top was a backwards baseball cap slung over her platinum-blonde curled locks.
2014: Jared Leto proved why the ‘zebra-print skinny jean’ trend should be left alone
Jared Leto proved why the ‘zebra-print skinny jean’ trend should be left alone after his appearance at the festival in 2014
The term ‘zebra skinny jeans’ is enough to strike fear into the heart of many a fashion guru.
But in 2014, Jared Leto, 54, went one step further by pairing the distinctive pant style with a white vest top and a plaid shirt tied around his waist.
Although mixing and matching patterns can sometimes work in your favor, this was sadly not one of those occasions.
The zebra-inspired pant is definitely one sartorial mistake that should be left in Coachella’s past.
2014: Bella Thorne fell straight into the festival fringe trap
Actress Bella Thorne fell down the festival fashion rabbit hole when she attended Coachella in 2014
Many believe that fringe should be on the festival banned list – but Bella Thorne went for it nonetheless when she attended Coachella in 2014.
She wore a brown fringed bra top, Aztec-print shorts and black and white flat sandals.
Falling further down the festival fashion rabbit hole, the actress, 28, wore her hair loose with some strands braided before adding floral headgear.
Thorne also appeared to have drawn a large star on her neck for the occasion.
2014: Kylie and Kendall Jenner took festival fashion too far
Kendall and Kylie Jenner looked out of place as they tried to elevate the traditional festival look in 2014 by opting for all-black ensembles
Also in 2014, Kylie and Kendall Jenner looked out of place as they tried – but arguably failed – to elevate the traditional festival look.
The duo looked more like they were ready for a catwalk than increasingly muddy fields.
Kylie, 28, was sporting a short black mini-dress that she wore with a studded bum bag, sturdy boots and a black material flower crown.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Kendall’s choices also left a lot to be desired as she stepped out in a plain black crop top and frill-lined shorts, which she teamed with a long, sheer patterned gown and heavily studded sandals.
2014: Vanessa Hudgens opted for face gems and a bindi
Vanessa Hudgens grappled with festival clichés in 2014
The year 2014 appears to have been a bad one for celebrity fashion choices all round as Vanessa Hudgens also made a festival fashion faux pas.
The actress, 37, tried to channel hippie chic with a patterned off-the-shoulder dress, which boasted an elasticated waist, as well as tasseled heeled boots.
But to make matters worse, she then wore a series of face gems including a central bindi, which are now largely considered a no-go beyond their intended usage.
At one point, she went incognito as she made her way across the green with a pair of angular sunglasses and a scarf wrapped around her face.
2015: Paris Hilton missed the mark on more than one Coachella occasion
Paris Hilton has been a repeat offender when it comes to slipping into cringeworthy Coachella attire – having made a fashion faux pas in 2012 (left) and 2015 (right)
Paris Hilton has been a repeat offender when it comes to slipping into cringeworthy Coachella attire.
The first strike was in 2012, when she fully embraced the festival clichés with a garish flowing maxi skirt, bejeweled bikini top and tacky flower crown.
But the socialite, 45, did not learn her lesson and was back just three years later with an equally awful ensemble.
In 2015, she wore a blue clashing print dress, circular sunglasses and a pair of cat ears.
2016: Kendall Jenner relied on tired festival fashion
Kendall Jenner sported cheesy circular sunglasses and an over-the top-silver necklace in 2016
She might already be on the list, but 2016 proved to be another fashion flop year for Kendall Jenner.
Aged 20, she showcased her 5ft10in model figure in a white lacy maxi dress.
Jenner bought into festival fashion clichés as she accessorized her eyelet frock with circle shades, brown gladiator sandals and an ornate necklace.
2017: Hailee Steinfeld’s baggy floral matching set
Hailee Steinfeld’s floral co-ord was a sight to behold at Coachella 2017
Hailee Steinfeld opted for a striking oversized floral tee for Coachella in 2017.
The Sinners actress, 29, made sure to make a statement and paired her massive top with matching thigh-high heeled boots.
She completed the look with a bold red lip and wore her hair in a slicked-back side ponytail.
Unfortunately, Steinfeld resembled more tropical getaway than festival chic, and her heels posed practicality issues.
2018: Emily Ratajkowski played it safe in a simple white dress
In 2017, model and actress Emily Ratajkowski’s simple button down dress fell flat
While Steinfeld put herself out there creatively in 2017, Emily Ratajkowski did the complete opposite one year later.
The model and actress, 34, played it safe in a drab white button-down dress as she attended Revolve Festival in 2018.
The simple frock featured a V-neck and puffy mid-length sleeves.
She complemented the ensemble with a Prada bag, nude heeled sandals and sunglasses.
2019: James Charles made fringe faux pas in his cheeky attire
YouTuber James Charles is not one to hold back when it comes to his fashion choices – and that was true of his Coachella outfit in 2019
The real surprise came when the star turned around and his outfit exposed much of his derriere
YouTuber James Charles is not one to hold back when it comes to his fashion choices – and his ‘cowboy-inspired’ outfit was among the most cringeworthy at Coachella in 2019.
He too made a fringe faux pas as he opted for a suede two-piece with excessive tasseling which gave a glimpse of some very skimpy denim shorts.
And, as if that wasn’t enough, he then finished the look with a color-coordinated cowboy hat.
The real surprise came when Charles, 26, turned around and exposed much of his derriere.
2022: Amber Rose came as a High School Musical cast off
Amber Rose turned heads in a red cheerleading outfit when she attended Coachella in 2022
Amber Rose certainly stood out from the festival crowd in 2022 when she wore a red, white and black mini cheerleader’s dress with a pleated skirt and cinched-in waist.
Emulating a High School Musical character, the model, 42, showed off her legs in a pair of black fishnet tights and opted for a pair of chunky black boots with white socks.
The top section of the television personality’s dress featured a plunging neckline, and her tattoo sleeves were on show.
Branded across the front of her outfit were the words, ‘sl*t walk 2022’.
2023: Megan Fox’s peep toed thigh-high boots
Megan Fox was a sight to see in a toothpaste blue wig
In 2023, Megan Fox was a sight to see in a toothpaste blue wig.
The actress, 39, complemented her colorful hair with a matching gem in the center of her cowgirl hat and a pair of Daisy Dukes.
But the wig was the least shocking element of Fox’s outfit, who bared her toes in suede thigh-high stilettos.
2024: Barry Keoghan in double Burberry
Barry Keoghan opted for double Burberry for Coachella in 2024
Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan showed off his interesting sense of style at Coachella in 2024.
The star, 33, dressed in a pair of Burberry shorts and a white plain white t-shirt as he was pictured on the grounds to show support to his now ex-girlfriend, Sabrina Carpenter.
Attempting to keep a low profile as he headed to the stage, Keoghan covered his face with a matching Burberry scarf and sunglasses.
2025: Julia Fox bared her bottom in a corset and stockings
Julia Fox, who previously dated Kanye West, opted for a corset and chaps in 2025
Last year, Julia Fox left little to the imagination in a very daring ensemble.
Channeling her ex-boyfriend Kanye West’s wife Bianca Censori, the actress, 36, dressed in a nude bustier top that laced up in the back and backless matching cycling shorts, which she wore over a pair of brown tights.
The strange look was completed with a thong, a pair of brown knee-high boots, brown arm warmers and a cropped brown cape.
Fox’s outfit showed off her bare backside and she proudly posed for photos.
2025: Alix Earle showed us what too many belts looks like
Alix Earle perhaps wore one too many belts for her Coachella outfit last year
That same year, Alix Earle opted for ‘pirate chic’ in a skimpy leather romper.
She also paired the garment with a minuscule green pleated skirt, which was barely visible, as well as an assortment of belts.
Earle, 25, completed the ensemble with Naked Wolfe chunky black boots.
At the time, fans were quick to point out the impracticalities of the outfit, especially after she admitted to spending 20 minutes alone lacing up her bodysuit.
2025: Cardi B dressed for freezing cold temperatures
Perhaps a little overdressed for the scorching Californian desert temperatures?
Cardi B looked like she was ready for a day on the ski slopes when she wore an all-blue ensemble to Revolve Fest, complete with furry knee-high boots.
The rapper, 33, put on a busty display in a low-cut blue top with matching leggings and a blue leather jacket.
The I Like It hitmaker further accessorized with a chunky diamond necklace and wore her raven tresses cascading down in a straight style.
One couldn’t help but think that Cardi B would be a little too hot for the soaring desert temperatures.
