Cornes' fears for Clarko's floundering Kangaroos

Kane Cornes has questioned North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson’s leadership ability, after the Roos went down to the previously winless Hawks by 45 points on Sunday.

Now the only team in 2024 without a win after six rounds, the Kangaroos face a daunting year, with questioned already being raised over the coaching panel’s ability as well as their players.

Cornes declared he is fearful that North Melbourne are holding out hope that Clarkson, who coached Hawthorn to four premierships in the modern era, will be able to bring that same fire power to their list.

Since taking over as Kangaroos coach at the start of 2023, Clarkson has struggled to unite his playing list, winning just three games last season.

On top of that, Clarkson took personal leave during the 2023 season, meaning he had limited time with his already floundering young side.

“Does he still have it? Just because you were a great coach once, are you going to be a great coach forever?,” Cornes said on Nine’s Footy Classified on Monday night.

“His record at Hawthorn towards the end wasn’t spectacular and it certainly hasn’t changed at North Melbourne.”
